Alexander Bublik v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There have been no previous main round matches between these two but Bublik and Nishioka have met each other twice in qualifiers of events. Both matches came on hard court surfaces with Nishioka winning the first 6-3, 6-4 at Shenzhen in 2018 and Bublik making it 1-1 with a victory at the Shanghai Masters of 2019.

Bublik Continues Decent Form

It was never going to be a stiff opener for Bublik, coming up against the 302nd-ranked Altug Celikbilek, after having gotten himself a first round bye. And as expected, the Kazakh came away a 6-2, 6-2 winner.

The match lasted all of 54 minutes, as Bublik established early supremacy in both the sets with a break in the very game both times. He went on to break once more in each of the two sets to complete the victory.

This comes on the back of back to back second round exits at the Great Ocean Road Open and Australian Open for Bublik, but after the world number 46 had gone all the way through to the final of the Antalya Open earlier in January.

He retired from that encounter against Alex de Minaur because of fitness concerns but hasn’t shown any side-effects of those issues in more recent times. Bublik should feel like he is in the right frame of mind coming into this encounter.

Nishioka Advances after Poor Season Start

It wasn’t the best of starts for Nishioka this season, suffering three back to back defeats at the ATP Cup and Australian Open.

While those defeats at the ATP Cup weren’t too unexpected, the Japanese world number 61 would have been reeling from his loss in the opening round of the season’s first major, going down to clay court specialist Pedro Martinez in four sets.

Which is why, back to back victories here at the Singapore Open should help bolster some of his confidence.

Nishioka started off with a well-fought victory over Michael Mmoh in his opener, needing three sets to get past the American but then came into his own with a 6-4, 6-2 drubbing of Maxime Cressy to seal his quarterfinal berth.

This will just be Nishioka’s second ATP quarterfinal appearance since he featured in the ATP Dubai in February last year. Can he go one better?

Bublik v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Bublik’s form makes him a solid favourite and 8/13 sound like good odds to come through in this.

Tip: Bublik to win: 8/13 (bet365)
