Jozef Kovalik v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

Both of their previous matches have come on the Challenger circuit, with the 130th-ranked Bagnis winning both in straight sets against his 128th-ranked opponent. Those matches, played in 2017 and 2018, were both held on clay.

Kovalik Stretched but Unscathed

Going in as a favourite in his second round match against Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera, Kovalik was stretched to two hours and 14 minutes before he came through in three sets.

Kovalik began in a shocking manner, losing the opening set after leading 4-0 as he went on to drop six games in a row. A break in the fourth game of the second set helped restore some of the confidence, and he then broke Vera again as he served to stay in the set at 2-5.

And undeterred by an early dropping of serve, Kovalik then broke back in the fourth game to level the proceedings, before taking advantage of three break-points to clinch the all-crucial break in the eighth game of the final set. The Slovakian player then completed the victory off the first match-point he got off his own serve.

Earlier, Kovalik had needed a three-setter against Daniel Elahi as well, which in turn had been his first main draw win of the season.

Bagnis Cruises Past Delbonis

It was a match of equals with Federico Delbonis holding a minor advantage but Bagnis came through his second round match in straight sets. He won 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 35 minutes, holding his nerve at crucial times in the process during the match.

Bagnis needed just the one break of serve in the first set but it was Delbonis who marched ahead with what looked to be a decisive break in the fourth game. Looking to serve for the second set, however, at 5-3, Delbonis was pushed back by Bagnis, who converted the second of his two break-points and then made it two breaks in a row in the very next game.

The 130th-ranked Argentine then served out the match to seal his place in the quarterfinals, having earlier won two of three qualifiers and the first round encounter against Nicolas Kicker in straight sets as well.

Having gone from strength to strength all tournament, this could be a good chance for Bagnis to come close to making it to his first ever ATP final appearance.

Kovalik v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much to choose between these two players and it becomes bit of a coin toss. We will have to go with Bagnis for the confidence he would have acquired over the course of this competition.

Tip: Bagnis to win: 4/5 (bet365)
