Thiago Monteiro v Juan Cerúndolo Head to Head

There have been no previous matches played between the 74th-ranked Monteiro and 335th-ranked Cerundolo.

Monteiro Inching into Top 70

The Brazilian is currently at his career-best ranking of 74th in the world and another win here to take him to the semifinal should see him break the top 70 on the ATP charts.

Monteiro has not been stretched either, having won both his opening round matches with relative ease so far. He started with a 6-3, 6-3 win over fellow Brazilian Joao Menezes, but more vitally then went past Roberto Carballes, a former world number 72 himself.

In his second round match, Monteiro needed an hour and 27 minutes to make it through, beating him 6-3, 6-4. Monteiro was off to a flier, breaking his opponent early and racing off to a 3-0 lead. Carballes Baena managed to hold on to his serve after that but Monteiro saved the only break-point opportunity he faced before serving out to win it 6-3.

The Spaniard put up a stronger resistance to begin the second set before Monteiro exchanged breaks of serves in the fifth and sixth game. He broke again in the seventh, and while he needed to overcome three break-points and needed three match-points in the 10th game of the second set, the Brazilian finally came through to seal his quarterfinal berth.

Cerúndolo Shocks Kecmanovic

Just about a month ago, Cerúndolo was playing on the Futures tour. Just over a week ago, he was getting knocked out of the first round of a Challenger competition.

And here we are, fast forward 10 days and Cerúndolo will be featuring in the quarterfinal of an ATP competition. He made it through the qualifiers, winning all three in straight sets, before taking on Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round.

He came away a straight-set winner, and then pulled off a stunning win over Miomir Kecmanovic, the Kitzbuhel Open winner from the previous season.

In two hours and 21 minutes, Cerúndolo broke his opponent six times, getting broken just thrice in the process, and it was down to his ability to take advantage of Kecmanovic’s second serve off which he won nearly half of the points.

Can he now show a similar wherewithal coming up against the seventh seed?

Monteiro v Cerúndolo Prediction and Tip

Monteiro is an overwhelming favourite here with bet365 offering 2/9 for his win but we do think Cerúndolo has done enough to suggest he could make things tricky for his opponent. Looking at the games market for this one.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
