Coria Crashes in the Paire Party

Okay, so may be it cannot be called a party given what Benoit Paire has gone through over the last nine months. But the Frenchman did look like he was up for a fight, having only just won his second ATP match since the resumption of tennis in August last year.

Coria, however, gave signs of playing at a level better than his world number 95 at the moment. And despite a fighting performance from Paire in their quarterfinal, the Argentine came through in an hour and 16 minutes to enter the last four.

He won 6-3, 6-2, following a fighting first set – at least for a while – in which they exchanged breaks of serve to take it to 3-3. From there on, however, Coria broke Paire twice in the first set and three more times in the second to wrap up the encounter.

Coria had gotten to the quarterfinals will wins over Dominik Koepfer and Francisco Cerúndolo – yes, he has already beaten one of the Cerúndolo brothers in the tournament and now has a chance to make it two in two.

Cerúndolo Continues with Dream Run

A qualifier in the tournament, the 19-year-old has shown capabilities beyond what had been expected from him as a 335th-ranked player in the world playing in his first ever tournament.

After disposing off Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets in his opener, it was expected that Cerúndolo would be finished by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic but the Argentine came back from a set down to squeak past his opponent.

And in his quarterfinal against Thiago Monteiro, he needed another three sets but got through in a result that surprised not just the fans but Cerúndolo himself who admitted at the end of the encounter “I can’t believe it”. Now the youngest Argentine to feature in an ATP semifinals in nearly 14 years, Cerúndolo will have to continue surprising himself if he wants to make it to his maiden final on ATP debut.

There’s a small matter of avenging his brother’s defeat as well.

Coria v Cerúndolo Prediction and Tip

Coria is a favourite here but we have seen how Cerúndolo has been dealing with favourites in this tournament. Expecting another three-setter would be a tough one but for the 19-year, it shouldn’t make it too difficult and we believe he can snatch at least a set off Coria.

Tip: Cerúndolo to win a set – Yes: 8/13 (bet365)
