Kristina Mladenovic v Mihaela Buzarnescu Head to Head

Mladenovic, the world no.51, has never faced Buzarnescu before this.

Mladenovic Remains a threat Indoors

In its second edition as an International-level tournament, the 2021 Lyon Open will be an opportunity for Kristina Mladenovic to add to her trophy cabinet a third career title. The Frenchwoman tends to blow hot and cold at fluctuating periods during the season, but she is capable of mastering the odd deep run at events played on home soil.

Mladenovic, a two-time titlist on tour in singles competition, has won both of her titles on an indoor hardcourt. The last of which came in St. Petersburg in 2017. It was during that season she peaked at a career-high ranking of world no.10.

Despite plummeting down the rankings in recent seasons, the Frenchwoman has performed modestly to loiter around the top 50 – she is not technically inside it (currently ranked 51) – but could re-enter with a good run next week.

As the fourth seed in Lyon, Mladenovic was slow off the blocks to start the new year. She made first round exits in Abu Dhabi and Yara Valley Classic. But at the Australian Open, she found her range. Mladenovic registered one of the biggest upsets on day two at the year’s first Grand Slam. She stunned world no.25 Maria Sakkari en route to the third round, equaling her best showing Down Under (also third round in 2016).

At this week’s Adelaide International, Mladenovic was beaten in the first round in straight sets by Jil Teichmann.

Buzarnescu Seeks First Win in Almost Two years

The last time Mihaela Buzarnescu won a tour-level match was in Hiroshima in 2019. If Buzarnescu is not able to pull off a match win from somewhere in the forthcoming weeks (starting in Lyon), there is the likelihood of matching Kristina Mladenovic’s infamous 15-match losing streak from 2018.

Buzarnescu’s winless run is not into double figures just yet, so that could be some sort of consolation heading to her first round match against Mladenovic.

But in fairness to the left-handed Romanian, her career at the top level has been a grind. For much of it, Buzarnescu’s progress has been derailed by a series injuries. It is worth remembering she played in the main draw of a Grand Slam at the age of 29, and she was 30 when she won her first tour-level title in San Jose in 2018.

There was also the hard luck of the draw due to her low ranking. In fact, she had to qualify for this year’s Australian Open, and only gained entry as a lucky loser. She took a set off Bianca Andreescu in Melbourne, but lost in three.

This week at the Adelaide International, Buzarnescu was involved in a high-tempered first round match against Jil Teichman. The Swiss woman accused Buzarnescu of faking injury in the second set, leaving the 32-year-old Romanian in tears at the end of the match.

Mladenovic v Buzarnescu Prediction and Tip

Mladenovic is tough to beat indoors. If you factor in the extra incentive of playing at home against an opponent who hasn’t won for quite some time, we should expect a straightforward victory for the Frenchwoman.

Tip: Mladenovic to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
