Petra Kvitova vs Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

Kvitova leads 4-1 in the head to head tally. She has won their last four meetings, including the final match of the Qatar Open back in 2018. Kvitova won that match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Kvitova Makes Her 3rd Consecutive Final in Doha

Kvitova may have had a bleak start to the season but she is on course to turn it all around in Qatar. Enjoying the bye into the second round, the number 4 seed started her journey with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

In the quarterfinal, she ran into some difficulties against the Estonian Anett Kontaveit. The match dragged on for three sets but Kvitova saw herself through to the semis with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win. Things got relatively easier for her in the semifinal where she dispatched the American qualifier Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-4.

The Qatar Open is one of the few tournaments where Kvitova has enjoyed a great deal of success. She has made it to the final in her last two appearances in Doha, going all the way back in 2018.

Last year, she had to settle for the runners-up trophy after losing to Aryna Sabalenka. Nonetheless, she did beat the top seed, Ashleigh Barty, en route to the final.

So far in 2021, the 30-year-old has played in the Australian Open Series where she never made it past the early rounds. In the Melbourne Grand Slam, she was stunned by Sorana Cirstea in the second round. The Czech incurred a similar fate in the Yarra Valley Classic too where she was beaten by Nadia Podoroska in the round of 16.

Kvitova obviously has got an incredible pedigree on the tour with 2 majors, 6 Fed Cups, and over 25 singles titles. As a former World No. 2, she will definitely fancy her chances in Doha this time around, especially given her healthy record over Muguruza.

Muguruza Gets a Walkover

Garbine Muguruza is heading into the final match of WTA Doha after breezing past Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian withdrew from the semifinal match owing to a back injury, giving the Spaniard a walkover into the final.

Muguruza may consider herself a bit lucky, considering that Azarenka was looking incredibly dangerous before she succumbed to her injury. Moreover, she gets to benefit from an extra day of rest which is certainly what every player looks for in a match of this calibre.

Currently ranked World No. 16, her run in Doha so far has been a bit tricky. Starting with a straight-set win over Veronika Kudermetova, she ran into a lot of resistance against Aryna Sabalenka. Muguruza fought through with 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinal. There, she met Maria Sakkari whom she defeated in straight sets.

Muguruza has had a significantly better run than Kvitova this season. She reached the third round in WTA Abu Dhabi and followed it with a runner-up feat in the Yarra Valley Classic, where she lost to Barty. In the Australian Open, she reached the fourth round before losing to Naomi Osaka in three sets.

Purely in terms of overall form, Muguruza is certainly on the same wavelength as Kvitova. She too has won a couple of majors and featured in the final on two other occasions. However, in terms of trophies, it is the Czech who eclipses her significantly.

Kvitova vs Muguruza Prediction & Tip

This is truly a battle of the evens. Kvitova has a slight psychological edge given her lead in the head to head tally. That said, Muguruza has been in a much better form and can make life difficult for her Czech adversary. All in all, expect an action-packed match.
