Ramos-Vinolas Aiming To Reach Second Final In Two Weeks
World No. 46 Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain inched closer to a 10th career final and a second in two weeks as he outlasted first-time ATP quarterfinalist Sumit Nagal on Friday.
Having lost the first set to the aggressive Indian, the Spaniard clawed his way back into the contest and served for the match at 5-2 in the third before a couple of crucial errors from the left-hander allowed a resurgent Nagal to come back and level the set at 5-5.
However, the little comeback had taken a lot out of the Indian, who seemed exhausted in the closing stages and Ramos-Vinolas pounced on the opportunity to finally close out the contest 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in two hours and 27 minutes.
Three-setters have become a routine for the fifth seed, who played five three-setters at the Cordoba Open last week, winning four of them to reach the final but losing the all-important one against 19-year-old Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina to finish runner-up.
He kicked off the Argentina Open campaign with a three-setter as well, defeating Denmark’s Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 56 minutes. However, he had a relatively easy second round, defeating Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-4.
A quarterfinalist at the French Open in 2016, the 33-year-old Ramos-Vinolas won the Swedish Open in 2016 and the Swiss Open in Gstaad in 2019.
On Saturday, he will be facing surprise semifinalist Francisco Cerundolo, whose brother Juan Manuel Cerundolo deprived him of a third ATP title last Sunday at the Cordoba Open final. It will be interesting to see if Ramos-Vinolas can stop the elder Cerundolo and reach a ninth final on clay.

Cerundolo Rebounds To Knock Out Andujar
A week after his younger brother’s stunning run to the Cordoba Open title on ATP main draw debut, Francisco Cerundolo inched closer to another title for the Cerundolo family, as the 22-year-old rallied from a set down to knock out the sixth seed Pablo Andujar of Spain and reach his first ATP semifinal.
Converting four of 11 break points and saving seven of 10, Cerundolo ousted the four-time ATP winner 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a two-hour-and-12-minute quarterfinal on Friday.
Ranked 137th in the world, Cerundolo had not won on the Tour before the Cordoba Open last week, where he beat Italy’s Gianluca Mager in the first round before falling to compatriot Federico Coria in the Round of 16.
At the Argentina Open, Cerundolo showed nerves of steel as he survived two close three-setters in the three qualifying rounds. In the main draw, he got his revenge against Coria with a straight sets win in the first round and then upset the third seed Benoit Paire in the Round of 16 before causing another upset in the quarterfinal.
The 22-year-old right-hander has won 11 Challenger and Futures titles, including four last year. He finished runner-up at a Challenger event in Chile last month.
Ramos-Vinolas v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip
The experienced Ramos-Vinolas will hold the edge but he will be wary of the older Cerundolo, who has taken out the third and the sixth seeds. Expect this contest to go the distance as well.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
