Nishioka Hoping to Start Well
2018 Shenzhen Open winner Yoshihito Nishioka comes to Marseille with a 2-4 record this year.
Having begun the season with two defeats on the trot at the ATP Cup and a first-round exit at the Australian Open, the 25-year-old finally got back to winning ways at the Singapore Open.
The left-handed Japanese battled past America’s Michael Mmoh 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and then knocked out another American, Maxime Cressy, in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal, where he was beaten by tournament runner-up Alexander Bublik.
The World No. 54, who defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert for his maiden ATP title in Shenzhen, reached his second ATP final last year, at Delray Beach. A second title though remained elusive as he went down fighting to Reilly Opelka in the title clash.
The 25-year-old had an 11-9 record on the tour last year, which included a run to the quarterfinals at Cologne-2 in addition to the final at Delray Beach.

Ruusuvuori Yet To Lose a First Round Contest this Year
Facing the Japanese in the first round will be Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, who hasn’t lost an opener at the top level this year, but is yet to clear the second round obstacle.
Kicking off the season at the Antalya Open, Ruusuvuori ousted Jiri Vessely in the first round, but was knocked out by Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in the next.
In he next event, the Murray River Open, he once again got past his first round opponent, Viktor Troicki, but was sent packing by Borna Coric in the Round of 32.
The pattern continued at the Australian Open, where he upset 10th seed Gael Monfils in a thrilling five-set first round contest, but yet again failed to win two matches in a row, exiting the second round after a four-set defeat to Spain’s Pedro Martinez, who had beaten Nishioka (his Monday’s opponent) in the first round of the tournament.
The 21-year-old right-handed Finn has an overall 14-16 career record. He reached his first ATP semifinal in Nur Sultan last year.
The World No. 87 also reached the second round of the Cincinnati Open and made his main draw debuts at the U.S. Open (where he won his first match at a major before falling in the second round) and the French Open (where he made a first-round exit).
Nishioka v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip
Expect a close contest between Nishioka, who snapped his losing streak in Singapore and got a couple of wins in the bag, and Ruusuvuosi, who is slowly make a mark at the highest level.
Nishioka is seeded, ranked higher and has more experience, so he will be expected to win the contest, but the Finn has shown in the past that he can give the higher-ranked opponents a run for their money, so he won’t let it go easily.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
