Jessica Pegula v Yaroslava Shvedova Head to Head
The only meeting between Pegula and Shvedova took place in 2012 in the first round of qualifying in Charleston. The Kazakh won the match in straight sets.

Pegula in Peak Form
Jessica Pegula wants to be known as professional tennis player, but the general perception is that the household name that the 27-year-old American retains will make it increasingly difficult. Pegula, whose parents own the NFL and NHL franchises in the States, is looking to change that perception.
And at the moment it seems she cannot do any wrong. Currently ranked 44th in the world, Pegula has been playing some of the best tennis of her career in the last couple of months. She is now on course to be Pegula the tennis player, and not the Billionaire daughter in people’s minds.
At 27, she is a late bloomer and a dangerous floater to any of the top players. The early part of her career was blighted by a series of never-ending injuries. But the Buffalo-born American has made up for the lost time in those turbulent early years.
Pegula earned a first career top 10 win at this year’s Australian Open when she beat Elina Svitolina in the fourth round and advanced to the quarterfinals of a Major for the first time. Although she lost to her good friend Jennifer Brady in an all-American affair, Pegula has maintained that sizzling run of form to the other side of the continent.
She kicked off her Middle Eastern swing in Doha last week, where she reached the semifinals as a qualifier, registering a second top 10 scalp in the process. Only a red hot Petra Kvitova stopped her in her tracks.
Can she continue to challenge in Dubai, where she has never played before?

Shvedova Using Protected Ranking in 2021
Yaroslava Shvedova is one of the most accomplished tennis players from Kazakhstan, particularly on the doubles court where she is a multiple Grand Slam winner. Now at 33, and very much in the twilight of her career, she is hoping for one last swansong.
Shvedova missed the 2018 and 2019 seasons in their entirety due to surgery and childbirth. She returned to competitive tennis last year, but she only played in one match and lost in Doha. The coronavirus pandemic wiped out any hope of featuring more frequently on court. She ended the season without a ranking.
The 33-year-old is still using a protected ranking in 2021, after the WTA tour revised its rules, allowing returning mothers to benefit in featuring in the main draw of top tier events. However, she hasn’t hit the ground running. Shvedova lost in the first round of each of her first three tournaments, including the Australian Open.
In Doha last week, she went through qualifying where she was able to win her first tennis match in over three years, but missed out a spot in the main draw after losing her second round qualifying match.
Pegula v Shvedova Prediction and Tip
At 9/1, this is mission impossible for Yaroslava Shvedova. Granted the Kazakh is a former world no.25, she is just not in Pegula’s league right now. Expect the American to roll into round two.
Tip: Under 19.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
