Garbine Muguruza v Irina Begu Head to Head

On the WTA circuit, the head to head reads a 1-1 between these two players, with Muguruza having won on hard court and Begu beating her opponent on clay. Both these meetings had come in 2016.

Before that there had been two other matches, one at the ITF circuit and the other at the Fed Cup and Muguruza had won both those times.

Muguruza Ploughs Ahead with Consistent Form

It took Muguruza the start of the previous season to get back to her best form – or at least close to it anyway – after having endured a couple of really horrible seasons of tennis which saw her plummet from the world number one to outside the top 20.

And continuing from where she had left off in 2020, Muguruza has picked up the trail rather well in 2021. While a title win has been elusive, an appearance in two finals, losing to Ash Barty and Petra Kvitova in the process, says volumes about how well Muguruza has gone about her business.

Add the fourth round of the Australian Open to go with that, where she tested and was the only player to push the eventual winner Naomi Osaka on to the back-foot, and we have a brilliant beginning to the 2021 season for the Spaniard.

Can she finally win herself a tournament, especially one as prestigious as this WTA 1000 event?

Begu Comes Through the Qualifiers

While she will be taking on a player who is ranked 16th in the world and dishing out some excellent results, Begu’s 2021 performances as a 72nd-ranked player on the charts cannot go unnoticed.

Sure, she was dumped out of the Australian Open in the first round itself but before and after that, Begu managed herself a place in the quarterfinal in two of the tournaments. It was a quarterfinal at the Gippsland Trophy where she defeated Johanna Konta and lost to Osaka, and then there was another last-eight appearance at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she fell fighting to former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu.

Begu was struggling at a set apiece in the first qualifying round against Bethanie Mattek-Sands but since then hasn’t dropped a game.

She won the final set of that match 6-0 and then was 6-0,  4-0 ahead against Barbara Haas in her second qualifier before her opponent threw in the towel. In essence, she hasn’t dropped game since that second set against Mattek-Sands.

The Romanian will need all of that form and more when she takes on the player of her opponent’s calibre in her opener here.

Muguruza v Begu Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much of a doubt about this one with Muguruza starting out a heavy favourite starting out at 3/20 to win this. A straight-set win looks very likely here.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
