Sorana Cirstea v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head
There have bee two previous matches played between these two players and Cirstea leads Tsurenko 2-0. Those meetings, however, came in 2013 and 2016 respectively, with Cirstea winning on the hard courts of the 2013 Washington Open due to her opponent’s retirement and then beating her in straight sets at the clay court of the Istanbul Open

Decent Start but a Stumble at Lyon for Cirstea
Ranked 67th in the world, Cirstea looked to have done well in the first two tournaments she played – in Australia following the quarantine that is. Featuring at the Grampians Trophy, Cirstea made it to the quarterfinal there, which included a shock win over Belinda Bencic as well.
This was followed by a run through to the third round of the Australian Open where she stunned Petra Kvitova on her way before going down to Marketa Vondrousova.
With victories against Bencic and Kvitova under her belt, one would have thought her confidence coming into the WTA Lyon last week would have been sky-high but the result suggested something else. Playing Nina Stojanovic, who was 2/1 to win the encounter, Cirstea won a mere four games in the match, getting bagelled in the second set as well.
What Cirstea will hope is to shrug off that result and continue her quest to climb up the rankings, breaking into the top 50.

Tsurenko Yet to Win a Main Draw Match
Tsurenko was ranked 23rd in the world but it has been a spectacular nosedive since then, having now fallen down to world number 142. And it is reflected majorly in her results, with the Ukrainian having barely won anything in recent times.
This year, Tsurenko has featured in five tournaments before this one in Dubai, played in just two main draw matches and lost both. The rest of the times, she went out in the qualifiers of those competitions.
The slight bit of good news for Tsuremko, who last won a main draw match back in August 2020, is the manner in which she made it to the main draw here, registering an easy win over Martina Trevisan in the process. Would that, however, provide her with enough confidence to get past Cirstea here?
Cirstea v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip
According to the bookmakers this is too close to call with both starting out at 10/11 but we will have to back Cirstea for this one given the differences in their results and hence the confidence levels.
Tip: Cirstea to win: 10/11 (bet365)
