Marketa Vondrousova v Ana Bogdan Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the 2018 French Open and Bogdan won that opening round encounter in three sets. Vondrousova would go on to become a finalist at the same tournament the following year.

Vondrousova Resumes after Australian Open Run

After an early exit at the Abu Dhabi Open in January, Vondrousova clawed back well on the Australian leg of the summer. In the tuneup event in Melbourne, named the Yarra Valley Classic, the Czech made it to the semifinal where she fell to Garbine Muguruza rather easily.

That, however, didn’t stop her from registering her best ever result at the Australian Open where she sent Rebecca Peterson and Sorana Cirstea packing to make it to the fourth round of the tournament. There, like she had in Abu Dhabi, lost to Hsieh Su-wei in straight sets but the confidence from those two tournament results would have been second to none.

After all, Vondrousova is known to be more of a clay-court specialist, despite her extraordinary run in 2019 where she had made it to the final of the Budapest Open indoors, and quarterfinal at both, the Indian Wells and Miami Open.

She hasn’t played since the end of the Australian Open though, so it would be interesting to see if she can overcome the slight lack of rhythm quickly enough here.

Bogdan Struggling to Break into the Top 80

She is a former world number 59 but over the past three seasons, Bogdan hasn’t seen the inside of the top 80 on the WTA rankings. Ending the previous two seasons ranked 98th and 92nd respectively, Bogdan is now ranked 101st in the world, unable to shrug off her form issues and march forward in tournaments.

Here at the WTA Dubai, Bogdan has done well however, winning back to back qualifiers to make it to the main draw. First she got past Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay in straight sets and then overcame Kamilla Rakhimova in a tight second round to set up this meeting against the Czech.

However, with just a first round win at the Yarra Valley Classic – against Rakhimova again – and another at the Phillip Island Trophy, she has just two main draw victories this season. And with her opponent showing the kind of form she has, Bogdan will have a mountain to climb in this opening round encounter.

Vondrousova v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova is 1/2 to win this and we are backing her to come away an easy winner. A straight-set win is a slightly riskier bet given the break that Vondrousova has had since her last play but that’s something to consider as well.

Tip: Vondrousova to win: 1/2 (bet365)
