Anett Kontaveit v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

At the WTA level, these two have faced off just once with Kontaveit coming through easily in the first round of the WTA Dubai last season. Four years before that, they had also faced off at the ITF circuit and Kontaveit had won that one as well.

Kontaveit Wastes No Time on Babos

Timea Babos didn’t last too long in her first round match against Kontaveit, with the Estonian needing less than an hour to win 6-2, 6-1 and reach the second round.

Kontaveit, who had shown mediocre form this season coming into this match, stormed into the second round with a strong first serve which saw her win 77% of those points, but more vitally it was also because her opponent struggled to do the same (won just 36% of her first serve points).

The world number 24 also broke her opponent six times in the match as opposed to dropping her own serve twice with Kontaveit coming back strongly both times after losing serve. In fact, both the sets started with Kontaveit unable to hold but was able to overcome that very quickly to break back and level the proceedings.

Before this, Kontaveit had shown sparkle at the Grampians Trophy in Melbourne, where she made the semifinal and later was also a quarterfinalist at the WTA Doha, having reached the third round at the Australian Open as well.

Can she now skip past Cirstea?

Cirstea Overcomes Odds in Opener

Needing just an hour and 23 minutes, Cirstea managed to overcome the odds to beat Lesia Tsurenko in her first round match. Having gone into the match at evens to win it, she registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tsurenko.

It was match of fluctuating fortunes from the get-go and could have gone either ways. Like, for instance, Tsurenko was a break up, then dropped serve, and then saw Cirstea take a 4-2 lead only to drop serve while serving for the set at 5-3. It was in the 10th game of the opening set that Cirstea finally broke back to clinch the opening set.

Cirstea led 3-1 in the second set but then dropped serve yet again, only for a bizarre exchange of service breaks which lasted three games in a row and only ended when serving to stay in the match, Tsurenko faced a match-point and lost serve on it.

The Romanian had earlier lost in the first round of the Lyon Open but did make it as far as the third round of the Australian Open. Cirstea, in a matter of a couple of months, has already had scalps of Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic and will have the confidence to test out Kontaveit.

Kontaveit v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

While Kontaveit is a whopping 1/6 to win the match, we reckon Cirstea has it in her game to test out her opponent. May be a good option to go with over-games or even Cirstea to win a set.

Tip: Cirstea to win a set: 1/1 (bet365)
