Muguruza Itching for a Title

Since the 2019 Monterrey Open, Muguruza has reached three tournament finals but hasn’t won any.

The one way to look at it is she has gotten that far because around the same time, Muguruza had been struggling to regain some of her old form and on the women’s tour, with a plethora of young and experienced star present to compete with the best, it is never going to be easy.

Two of those finals have come in this season; first at the Yarra Valley Classic in the lead-up to the Australian Open and the second, more recently when she was a finalist in Doha last week. Both times Muguruza looked like she was in the form of her life, but came up against opponents who were in a far more sterling form.

At the first, Muguruza fell to the world number one Ash Barty before failing to arrive against Petra Kvitova in Doha last week where she won a sum total of just three games. Can she restart her quest for a long-due title with a comfortable win?

Anisimova Finally Wins One

With injuries and other issues making it difficult for the talented 19-year-old, Anisimova would be relieved she was able to get her first match out of the way. Facing Ana Konjuh in her opener here in Dubai, the American world number 32 came away with an easy victory, taking down her opponent 6-2, 6-2 to seal her first main draw win since the 2020 French Open.

Anisimova took time to get going but once she had broken her opponent in the sixth game of the first set, there was no looking back. She quickly wrapped up the first set after that, breaking her opponent another time and then going 2-0 up in the second set with a third break in a row.

While Konjuh kept herself within touching distance by not dropping serve again, Anisimova was able to hold with ease and then under pressure, the Croat lost serve yet again in the eighth game to award her opponent the match.

Muguruza would prove to be a far tougher opponent than Konjuh did but if Anisimova can come out all cylinders blasting, it could turn out to be an interesting contest.

Muguruza v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Muguruza is in irresistible form and it’s hard to back her opponent in this one. We will go to the extent of backing a straight-set win here.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
