Cori Gauff v Tereza Martincova Head to Head
The only time they have faced off in a competitive match was on the ITF circuit, way back in 2019 and on clay there, Martincova managed to get past Gauff in three sets.

It’s been the theme of the season from Gauff, those three-setters that she has been part of regularly. What’s interesting to see is the manner in which she has been winning them more regularly than losing them.
Her second round victory over Marketa Vondrousova after being a set down was her ninth three-setter of the season and the seventh time she won it as well.
The match lasted two hours and saw Gauff make a comeback from losing the first set 6-3 to bagel Vondrousova in the second. The third set, however, was closely fought and again it was Gauff’s maturity at that young age and inexperience shone through.
Gauff got the first break but this was followed by the Czech player levelling things off at 3-3. The American retaliated with a break in the seventh game and then held her serve after that to complete a gruelling, but satisfying three-set victory.
And now facing a player who has never seen the inside of the top 100 of the WTA rankings, Gauff would believe she would have a good chance to make it through to the last eight.

Qualifier Martincova Inching Back to Her Best
Once ranked 114th in the world, her career-best, Martincova has done well this season to get back to 125th and another solid performance in this tournament as a qualifier will help her inch towards her best ever. In fact, whatever happens from here on, she would have broken through that career-best and finish around the 105th mark.
Another win here will help her get through to the top 100 but that could be a lot tougher than winning has been so far.
Because while Kiki Bertens is a top-class player, she has only just returned to the sport having gotten operated on her Achille Heel last season and has been struggling for rhythm. Before that, Martincova had needed three sets to get past Kristyna Pliskova in her opener.
Gauff, however, will be a different kettle of fish.
