Laslo Djere v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the Argentine, ranked 86th in the world, and the 410th-ranked teenager.

Delbonis Hustles Past Martin

A day after spending nearly three hours on court before edging out Spain’s Jaume Munar in the first round, Argentina’s Federico Delbonis needed just an hour and 12 minutes to dispatch Slovakia’s Andrej Martin and book a place in the quarterfinals of the Chile Open.

The Round-of-16 win was also the first occasion this season that the eighth seed won two matches in a row.

Having begun the season with a first-round defeat to Australia’s Matthew Ebden at the Adelaide International, Delbonis came to Santiago with a 2-2 record at this year’s South American clay season.

He won both his first round matches in Cordoba and Buenos Aires, beating Pedro Sousa and Juan Manuel Cerundolo respectively, but failed to go past the second rounds, falling to Facundo Bagnis in Cordoba and Laslo Djere at the Argentina Open.

In Santiago, the 6’4” left-hander had to dig deep against the 102nd- ranked Munar in the opening round, before finally edging out the Spaniard 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

Delbonis had a far too easy second round against the 105th-ranked Martin, as he breezed past the Slovak with a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Winning 61% of the total points, Delbonis was broken just once by Martin, while he converted five of 10 break point chances.

A four-time finalist on the tour, Delbonis, who won titles in Sao Paulo in 2014 and Marrakech in 2016, finished with a 9-12 record in 2020. The 30-year-old featured in three quarterfinals last season, and one of those was in Santiago, where he lost the last eight battle to Norway’s Casper Ruud.

Rune Sends Paire Packing

Facing Delbonis on Friday will be Danish teen Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, who caused a massive upset on Wednesday, knocking out the second seed Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-3 and securing a maiden quarterfinal berth.

Rune, whose main draw debut as a wild card at the Argentina Open ended with a tough first-round defeat to Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas, is on a five-match winning streak. He won all three of his qualifiers in Santiago, before recording his maiden ATP main draw win, against Argentina’s Sebastian Baez.

A day after needing an hour and 20 minutes to see off Baez 6-3, 6-2, he needed just 62 minutes to outplay the Frenchman, ranked 29th in the world.

Rune didn’t face a single break point and converted four of eight in what turned out to be a surprisingly one-sided contest against Paire, who won just four points on second serve.

The 17-year-old Dane, who is the junior No. 1, won the French Open boy’s title in 2019. He will be aiming to secure a first semifinal spot with another top 100 win on Friday.

Djere v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Can the Dane keep the fairytale going? That’s a question in everyone’s mind. Given the teen’s form this week, there is strong reason to believe that he can cause another upset on Friday. And one cannot overlook the fact the unheralded players have been punching above their weights over the last couple of weeks. In Cordoba, an unheralded Juan Manuel Cerundolo went on to win the title, and in Buenos Aires, Cerundolo’s elder brother, Francisco, went on to reach the final against all odds.

Delbonis would like to believe otherwise though. He is the eighth seed, a former World No. 33, a two-time winner and has played 290 matches on the Tour, 287 more than his opponent. He will definitely start as the favourite to advance.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
