Daniil Medvedev v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

Interestingly, Herbert leads the head to head 2-1, with one of their previous matches having come in the qualifiers of this very tournament in 2015. Since then they have also played in Rotterdam in 2018 where Medvedev won a tough three-setter and the French Open inn 2019 where Herbert needed five sets to blow his opponent away in the first round.

Medvedev Puts Rotterdam Defeat Behind

It wasn’t the way he would have liked to finish off the match but Medvedev made it to the final when his opponent Matthew Ebden retired from their semifinal.

Medvedev was leading by a set and 3-0 in the second when Ebden decided to withdraw from the contest after having given it his all despite a medical timeout after the opening set. The match, as a result, lasted just 55 minutes with Medvedev admitting Ebden had played as well, if not better than the Russian till he got injured.

The Russian saved three break-points in the sixth game of the opening set, and then broke his opponent in the ninth before serving it out the next game. This was followed by back to back breaks for Medvedev, following which Ebden opted to retire from the encounter.

Medvedev might have lost his opening round match in Rotterdam last week in a surprise result but he looks to have shrugged that off and moved on well this week. After receiving a first round bye, the soon-to-be world number two has dropped just 16 games across the six sets he has played so far.

A 10th title beckons.

Herbert Has the Time of His Recent Career

Frenchman Herbert has never won an ATP title but one must quickly add he was once ranked 36th in the world. Today his ranking has fallen to outside the top 90 but the manner in which the 29-year-old has played this entire week, it does look like he has recaptured some of his lost mojo.

He started the week off with a victory over Kei Nishikori, who might not be the force from the yesteryear but still a hard nut to crack. A 6-3, 6-4 drubbing of Cameron Norrie followed soon after in the second round but then Herbert registered the biggest win of his career by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets.

And if one thought the rush from defeating the world number five would make it tougher for him going up against fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert, it was proved to be wrong. Herbert needed a mere hour and six minutes to get past Humbert 6-3, 6-2, facing not a single break-point in the entire encounter.

The question now is if he can continue to sustain at a similar levels or if Herbert needs a mini-miracle.

Medvedev v Herbert Prediction and Tip

Medvedev has won all his matches in straight sets, but like was the case in the first few games of the opening set, Herbert might get bit of a chance at some point. Can he drive a wedge and create something big for himself here?

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
