Evans Looking Good in 2021

British No. 1 Daniel Evans has started the year on the best note possible – by winning his maiden single’s title.

He took the title at the Murray River Open in Melbourne, where his career-best run included wins over Bora Coric, Jeremy Chardy, and Felix Auger-Aliassmime. Impressively, he achieved this feat without as much as losing a set.

Almost a decade since turning pro, this is certainly a good accomplishment for the 30-year-old Evans, who also achieved his best singles ranking as World No. 26 shortly after that title run. However, in his next couple of events in the Australian Open and Qatar Open, he lost in the early rounds. His last event was in Doha last week, where he fell to Roger Federer in the second round.

Evans has been chipping away at the pecking order patiently through the last couple of seasons. In 2016-17, he was in the top 50 but never managed to make any discernible moves upwards from there. If anything, it is only now that he is starting to find his true stride.

Karatsev Capable of Upsets

Aslan Karatsev is not too far behind himself when it comes to having a career-defining season. The 27-year-old Russian won his first ATP title just last week in the Qatar Open, where he won the doubles with Andrey Rublev.

Before that brilliant run, he had an equally thrilling time in the Australian Open too where he was a semifinalist. In his first appearance at Melbourne in over five seasons, he made it to the final four. What is more captivating is the fact that he fought through the qualifying rounds and then beat the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Auger-Aliassime, and Grigor Dimitrov on his way.

Ultimately, he fell to Novak Djokovic but that run propelled him into the top 50 from outside of the top 100. He last played in Doha he fell in the second round to Dominic Thiem.

The Russian spent most of his time on the Challenger circuit last year where he enjoyed quite a bit of success. He had four final appearances; he won two of those while settling for the runners-up trophy in the other two.

Evans vs Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Both the players are evenly matched for this tie. That said, Evans will start as the favourite on account of his slightly superior overall form and experience.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
