This will be a first meeting between Sinner, ranked 32 in the world, and Karatsev who is sitting at a career-high ranking of no.42.

Sinner Upsets Bautista Agut

Jannik Sinner continues to be a constant nuisance towards top 20 players. His latest win came against the world no.11 Roberto Bautista Agut in a match that stretched over two hours.

Victory was devoid of any drama, but the young Italian weathered a fiery storm from the determined Spaniard in the second set. Having taken the opening set 6-4 with some smooth hitting, Bautista Agut secured a decisive break of serve in the eighth game of the second set and served to level.

The third set was a battle of nerves, and surprisingly it was Sinner, who is 13 years younger that managed to steady himself in the clutch moments. Bautista Agut’s untimely double fault in game 12 of the third set gave Sinner two match points. The 19-year-old converted with a looping forehand.

Overall, Sinner battled fiercely and always looked in the ascendancy. He fired an astonishing 48 winners to breach the formidable defenses of the 32-year-old former Dubai champion, and won 77% first serve points.

Sinner will play two quarterfinal matches on Thursday, having made it to the last eight in doubles pairing with Hubert Hurkacz. Will the Italian book his spot in the semis when he plays one of the tour’s breakout stars of 2021?

Karatsev Reaches First QF at 500-level

Aslan Karatsev’s wildcard entrant into the main draw of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships was a no-brainer regardless of whether his ranking would have made the cut-off list.

After all, the Russian had produced a herculean effort at the Australian Open when he became the first qualifier to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam in his main draw debut. And so far, Karatsev is in the middle of proving to remote viewers that his Melbourne exploits were not a fluke.

Rather than blasting his opponents off court, Karatsev needed to grind out his three wins in Dubai. He beat Egor Gerasimov for the second time this year, and then accounted for Dan Evans and Lorenzo Sonego in three sets. As a result, Karatsev has reached the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 tournament for the first time.

The 27-year-old has made up more than 70 places in the rankings since the turn of the year, which is one of the biggest jumps in such a short space of time. Currently he sits at a career-high ranking of world no.42. Last week he won the doubles title in Doha along with fellow countryman Andrey Rublev.

Can that triumph spark a potential first singles title at tour level this week?

Sinner v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Both players have been pushed to their absolute limits this week. Sinner has looked marginally better and starts this match as the favorite. But it would unwise to write off Karatsev. The price on the Russian to spring an upset is huge and judging by Karatsev’s achievements this year, he should account for the Italian.

Tip: Karatsev to win: 6/4 (bet365)
