Against All Odds, Chardy On a Run in ’21

French veteran Jeremy Chardy had a good start to the season, making the semi-finals of both the Antalya Open and the Melbourne ATP 250, before a first round loss at the Australian Open to none other than now nine-time champion Novak Djokovic.

He continued his season at the Rotterdam ATP 500 making the quarter-finals scalping David Goffin and losing a tight match to eventual champion Andrey Rublev. An uncomfortable hamstring saw him look out of sorts against Dan Evans in their Doha opener, but he was back in form at the ATP 500 in Dubai last week.

Chardy  did well in his opener against Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinalos in three sets setting up a second round match against rising Aussie Alex de Minaur, who he also scalped in another decider. Up against rising Russian Karen Khachanov, it was yet another comeback victory for the Frenchman leading him to a quarter-final against Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Although he did not succeed against Shapovalov, the 34-year-old Chardy is in the midst of a great season rekindling memories of the form that once saw him ranked in the top 25 in the world.

Kudla Yet To Win A Main Draw Match in a While

Ukrainian born American Denis Kudla has been on the ATP tour for most of the last decade. Kudla has shown promise throughout his career, and with a big serve, backed up by a powerful forehand, has had some good results against higher ranked players, on the faster surfaces.

Kudla made the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2015, around the same time that he was ranked in the top 50 in the world, which has been his highest ever ranking. He is currently outside of the top 125 in the world.

The American has not managed to produce consistent performances and results, and that has prevented him from being a greater force to reckon with on the tour.

It has been a disappointing return to the tour since the Covid hiatus for Kudla, with him unable to qualify for the Australian & French Opens, and straight round losses at the US Open 2020 and last week at Acupulco. Kudla has played ATP Challengers in the meantime hitting some form and will hope to carry it forward here in Miami.

Chardy v Kudla Prediction and Tip

It is a clash of veterans, with Chardy on a resurgent run and Kudla struggling for form. Expect a straight sets win for the Frenchman.

Tip: Chardy to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
