Steve Johnson v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Johnson and Hanfmann have never played each other before this.

Johnson Begins Season at Acapulco

With fitness being a concern, Johnson opted to start off his season campaign only as recently as a week ago when he played in the Mexican Open. Unfortunately for him, but not too surprisingly, Johnson fell to a straight-set defeat in his very first round match, losing to Laslo Djere 6-2, 6-3.

And it’s not like Johnson had gotten going too well after the pandemic break either.

He failed to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters main draw, and then proceeded to lose four of the seven main draw matches he played after that during the season.

Things hadn’t looked this bad for Johnson earlier though. Before tennis – and other sports – went on a break because of the pandemic, he had won a Challenger title in Bendigo, rode into the semifinal of the Newport Beach Challenger and then won another title at the Indian Wells Challenger.

Expecting him to turn things around in his very second match of the season, returning after this long a break, would be expecting a lot. Even if his opponent is nearly 30 places below him.

Hanfmann Struggling for Respite

Hanfmann shot to fame last season on the back of some solid Challenger form but more importantly with his display at the Kitzbuhel Open.

Having qualified for the main draw with a couple of wins there, Hanfmann then went on to defeat Alexander Bublik, Dusan Lajovic and Laslo Djere to enter the title-deciding round. And while he went down in straight sets to Miomir Kecmanovic in the final, he looked to have done enough to gun for the top-100 ranking.

A quarterfinal at the Sardinia Open followed soon after but the season ended for Hanfmann with back to back losses in the qualifiers – the change from clay to indoor courts making bit of a difference.

The German’s issue this season has been the lack of matches on clay, a surface he loves playing on. Hanfmann has played in six matches, including one on the Challenger tour but lost five of them with his only win coming over James Duckworth in Singapore.

Johnson v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

This could be an interesting one with Johnson coming off a long layoff and Hanfmann not doing too well this season. And that’s reflecting in the odds with Johnson starting off 4/5 and Hanfmann being 1/1.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
