Osaka Hoping to Better Miami Record

For a player of the calibre of Osaka, it’s surprising to see her best performance at the Miami Open is a third round appearance. And that’s a record she would desperately want to turn around this season especially given the kind of form she has been in all year.

Having begun her campaign in 2021 at the Gippsland Trophy, Osaka eased her way into the semifinal there before withdrawing from that match in order to be better prepared for the season’s first Grand Slam

And prepared she was and how!

Osaka faced challenges from Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Garbine Muguruza, Serena Williams and then finally Jennifer Brady but got the better of each of them to clinch her second title at the Australian Open.

She dropped just one set on her way to winning the title, and that came in a match she could well have lost against Muguruza. Except Osaka’s ability to exhibit ice-cool nerves in the face of adversity bailed her out of that encounter.

The Japanese number one now resumes her season with a second round tie against a player who shouldn’t test her out too much.

Tomljanovic Shocks Potapova

With the kind of record that Tomljanovic had coming into her first round match against Anastasia Potapova, it looked like there was only going to be one winner – the Russian Potapova. The Aussie, however, looked to have other ideas as she overcame Potapova 7-5, 6-0 in an hour and 29 minutes to make it to the second round.

Tomljanovic, who had entered the tournament on the back of three wins and five defeats from her previous eight matches, looked to have blown a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serve when Potapova retaliated with two breaks of her own.

In fact when Potapova came back from 1-4 down to leading 5-4 and then had three set-points on Tomljanovic’s serve, the writing looked to be on the wall for the Aussie. Except the match took another twice when Tomljanovic saved all those set-points and then broke her opponent in the very next game before serving for the set.

And then out of nowhere, Tomljanovic crashed into the Russian’s party by breaking her thrice and bagelling her in the second set.

It would require a lot more out of Tomljanovic to repeat the same dose on Osaka though.

Osaka v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Osaka, who has been on bit of a break, starts off a heavy favourite still with bet365 offering 1/8 for her win and 2/5 for a straight-set victory. While we think Osaka should win this in straight sets, there’s every chance it’s not a very straightforward win for the rusty Japanese player.

Tip: Osaka to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
