Ekaterina Alexandrova v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head
The Russian dominated the Argentine in their only previous meeting in Linz last year, winning the quarterfinal 6-2, 6-1.
Alexandrova Looking To Regain Early Season Form
2020 Shenzhen champion Ekaterina Alexandrova will begin her Miami Open challenge in the second round on Thursday.
The 30th seed, who received a first round bye, is 8-6 this year and has already featured in a semifinal and a quarterfinal.
Ranked 34th in the world, the 26-year-old displayed solid form in her season opener in Abu Dhabi, where she won her first two rounds before going down fighting to Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16.
She followed that performance with a run to the semifinals of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne, which including a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Simona Halep in the quarterfinals. Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi ended her run in the final four.
Alexandrova then equaled her best major showing at the Australian Open, reaching the third round, but failed to go past the Round of 32 for the fourth time in Grand Slams, losing to Australia’s Ash Barty.
Following the solid start to the season, the Russian has lost form in the previous three tournaments winning just once. She made first round exits from Lyon and Dubai Opens, losing to Clara Tauson and Cori Gauff respectively.
She ended the three-match losing streak by beating Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova in the Round of 16 in St. Petersburg, but fell in the quarterfinal to compatriot Margarita Gasparyan.
Podoroska Knocks Out Sherif
Facing Alexandrova in the second round will be Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, who knocked out Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the first round on Tuesday.
The Argentine, ranked 48th in the world, needed just 71 minutes to defeat the Egyptian 6-3, 6-1.
The win improved the 24-year-old to 6-6 in 2021. The 2020 French Open semifinalist’s best performance this season came at the Yarra Valley Classic, where she won her first three matches, including the Round of 16 against Petra Kvitova, to reach the quarterfinal before falling to Marketa Vandrousova in a third set match tie-break.
The 2020 WTA Newcomer of the Year also won the first match on her Australian Open main draw debut, defeating America’s Christina McHale in straight sets. But the right-hander couldn’t replicate her 2020 Roland Garros exploits, where she reached the final four on Grand Slam debut. She was knocked out of the second round in Melbourne by Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
Podorsoka was 1-3 from the three tournaments preceding the Miami Open.
Against Sherif on Tuesday, she won 62.1% total points in the match, converting seven of nine break points, while saving two of five.
Alexandrova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip
Alexandrova has lost a bit of form after a bright start, but will look to get back to winning ways on Thursday. Having beaten Podoroska before, she will be confident going into this one. The Argentine will put up a fight, but the Russian will be the favourite to win the contest.
Tip: Alexandrova to win: 4/7 (bet365)
