The 30th seed, who received a first round bye, is 8-6 this year and has already featured in a semifinal and a quarterfinal.

Ranked 34th in the world, the 26-year-old displayed solid form in her season opener in Abu Dhabi, where she won her first two rounds before going down fighting to Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16.

She followed that performance with a run to the semifinals of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne, which including a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Simona Halep in the quarterfinals. Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi ended her run in the final four.

Alexandrova then equaled her best major showing at the Australian Open, reaching the third round, but failed to go past the Round of 32 for the fourth time in Grand Slams, losing to Australia’s Ash Barty.

Following the solid start to the season, the Russian has lost form in the previous three tournaments winning just once. She made first round exits from Lyon and Dubai Opens, losing to Clara Tauson and Cori Gauff respectively.

Podoroska Knocks Out Sherif

Facing Alexandrova in the second round will be Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska, who knocked out Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the first round on Tuesday.

The Argentine, ranked 48th in the world, needed just 71 minutes to defeat the Egyptian 6-3, 6-1.

The win improved the 24-year-old to 6-6 in 2021. The 2020 WTA Newcomer of the Year also won the first match on her Australian Open main draw debut, defeating America’s Christina McHale in straight sets. But the right-hander couldn’t replicate her 2020 Roland Garros exploits, where she reached the final four on Grand Slam debut. She was knocked out of the second round in Melbourne by Croatia’s Donna Vekic.

Podorsoka was 1-3 from the three tournaments preceding the Miami Open.

Against Sherif on Tuesday, she won 62.1% total points in the match, converting seven of nine break points, while saving two of five.
