Lorenzo Sonego v Bjorn Fratangelo Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the Italian, ranked 34th in the world, and the American, ranked 233rd.

Sonego Lacking Consistency

Having ended 2020 on a high, which included a stunning upset of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the final in Vienna, Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego has had a slow start to 2021 and is 4-6 from six tournaments so far.

After being ousted by Australia’s Jason Kubler in the first round of Melbourne-2, the 25-year-old Sonego picked his first win of the season by beating Sam Querrey in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open.

The Italian looked in great position to secure a maiden berth in the Round of 32 of the Melbourne major, when he took a two-sets-to-love lead against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. But the 39-year-old made a remarkable comeback to knock out the Italian in five.

Currently ranked 34th in the world, Sonego’s best performance this year came in Montpellier, when he defeated Hugo Gaston and Sebastian Korda to reach the quarterfinal, before going out to David Goffin.

The defeat was followed by first-round exits in Rotterdam and Doha. He snapped the three-match losing streak in Dubai, beating Barnabe Zapata Miralles in the Round of 32 before throwing away a one-set-to-love lead in the Round of 16 defeat to Aslan Karatsev, who went on to clinch the title.

In his only previous appearance at the Miami Open in 2019, Sonego entered the main draw through qualifiers and then defeated Slovakia’s Martin Klizan before going down to John Isner in the next round.

Seeded 24th at the Miami Open this year, the Italian captured his only ATP title on grass in Antalya in 2019.

Fratangelo Unbeaten In Last Eight Matches

On Saturday, Sonego will face American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo who knocked out Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets in the first round on Thursday.

Ranked 233rd in the world, Fratangelo needed an hour and 30 minutes to beat the Spaniard 6-4, 6-4.

The straight sets win followed a dominant showing in the qualifying rounds, where the American beat Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Popko 7-5, 6-2 in the first round before handing Switzerland’s Marc Andrea-Huesler a 6-0, 6-1 thrashing in the second round.

Fratangelo, who won his fourth ATP Challenger title in Cleveland last week, has now won eight tennis matches in a row (including the five he won last week on his way to the Cleveland title).

The 27-year-old had begun the 2021 season at Delray Beach, beating fellow American Kevin King in the first round before falling to another American Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16.

Sonego v Fratangelo Prediction and Tip

Expect this to be a close contest. Sonego is the seeded player and has more experience at this level, so he will be the favourite but Fratangelo’s recent form suggests he won’t make it easy for the Italian.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
