Vondrousova Looking to Build on Decent Start

2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova will begin her Charleston Open campaign on Monday. The 21-year-old comes into the tournament with a solid 9-5 record in 2021, which includes a run to the semifinals of the Yarra Valley Classic.

Having lost her season opener in Abu Dhabi to Hsieh Su-wei, Vondrousova reached the final four at the Yarra Valley Classic by beating Russians Varvara Gracheva and Vera Zvonareva and Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in the first three rounds.

At the Australian Open, Vondrousova topped her previous best performance, reaching the fourth round in Melbourne for the first time in her career. The skilful lefty defeated Rebecca Peterson, Rebecca Marino and Sorana Cirstea before falling to Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei for the second time in the year.

In Dubai, she got through the opening round by knocking out Ana Bogdan but fell to Cori Gauff despite taking a one-set lead.

Vondrousova looked in decent touch in Miami as well, reaching the Round of 16 with wins over China’s Wang Qiang and Belinda Bencic before being outplayed by Aryna Sabalenka 6-1, 6-2.

It was the second heavy defeat for Vondrousova this year, following the 6-1, 6-0 rout against Garbine Muguruza at the Yarra Valley Classic. The Czech player has been involved in five three-setters this season, winning three of them.

Vondrousova, who won her only WTA title as a 17-year-old in Biel, had three runner-up finishes in 2019, in Budapest, Istanbul and Roland Garros.

Babos Continues To Struggle in Singles

On Monday, the Czech will face Hungary’s Timea Babos, who is 3-5 in the main draws this season.

The World No. 5 doubles player, Babos is ranked 108th in singles. Her three wins this year came over Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig in the first round of the Gippsland Trophy; Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure in the first round of the Australian Open; and Russia’s Varvara Gracheva in the Round of 32 in Lyon.

The 27-year-old is a three-time singles winner on the tour, winning titles in Monterrey in 2012, in Budapest in 2017 and in Taipei City in 2018. She has also been a runner-up on five occasions, with the most recent being in Monterrey in 2018.

A four-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Babos has reached a staggering 37 doubles finals, winning 24 of them, which includes the last three WTA Finals titles.

Marketa Vondrousova v Timea Babos Prediction and Tip

While Babos continues to soar in the doubles game, her struggles in singles events are pretty evident. And it will take a massive effort from her to overcome a player of Vondrousova’s quality. Expect the Czech to win this in straight sets and move into the next round for a clash with either Ajla Tomljanovic or Christina McHale.

Tip: Vondrousova to win in straight sets: 1/3 (bet365)
