Arantxa Rus v Irina Bara Head to Head

Rus Glad with Change in Environment

It hasn’t been the kind of start Rus would have been hoping for. The Dutchwoman has played in eight main draw matches this season and won just two of them – first round victories at the Lyon Open and Miami Open.

At the remaining four tournaments, Rus has been bundled out in the first round, and that’s something the world number 84 would like to change around as she gets on to the clay court swing leading into the French Open.

Clay has been Rus’ forte too. While she has done well on hard courts, Rus had made it to the second round of the Italian Open last year as a qualifier and also reached that stage in Prague.

And in the year before that, Rus played in multiple competitions on the ITF circuit, winning a whopping 10 tournaments of which eight were on clay too.

Question is whether she can convert that performance into a solid start here on the clay court swing. She does start off against a player who has had her own form issues.

Bara Yet to Win a Main Draw Match

Bara had made a strong finish to the previous season when, a qualifier at the French Open, she defeated Donna Vekic in the first round of the tournament en route her third round appearance there. She had entered Roland Garros on the back of having reached the final at an ITF event where she went down to Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Unfortunately for her, Bara hasn’t quite made the kind of start she would have liked to this season.

Featuring at the Australian Open qualifiers, she was knocked out in the first round, and then followed it up with a first round loss at both the Lyon Open and Guadalajara Open. And then again at the Monterrey Open qualifiers, she managed to win just one game before bowing out in the opener.

This should leave her without too much of chance here but there’s bit of a catch. Bara is a clay-court specialist and when she did play at the UTR Pro Tennis Series, she featured in six matches and didn’t drop a set across any of them.

Last year too, her performances on clay far outdid those outside of that surface and this is why we believe this might not be the most straightforward of matches.

Rus v Bara Prediction and Tip

While Rus starts off as a heavy favourite at 2/5 we believe this could go the distance with Bara snatching at least a set off her opponent.

Tip: Games Handicap Bara +3.5: 1/1 (bet365)
