The pair have never played each other before.  This will be the first match between the Slovak and the Argentine.

Gombos Looking for Senior Level Form

The current Slovak number one, Gombos has enjoyed a fair degree of success on the junior tours, where he has won ten tournaments, a mixture of hard and clay court events.

He has yet to translate that form to the senior tour, but he did achieve his best ever result in a Grand Slam by reaching the third round in Paris last year, before losing to another Argentine, Diego Schwartzman. Paris obviously agreed with him as he also made it to the third round of the Masters’ event there a few weeks later.

2021 has been very disappointing for him so far, and he has only won one match, and that was in the qualifying competition for Rotterdam.

He did qualify for the main draw in Doha through the lucky loser route, but then was beaten by the Tunisian veteran Malek Jaziri.

His last outing was a clay court event in Marbella on the Challenger tour, and resulted in another first round defeat.

Londero, a Clay Court Specialist

Londero, like most South American players was brought up on clay. He has reached two ATP finals, both in 2019, winning the Cordoba Open and then, a few months later in Stockholm, beaten at the final stage of the Swedish Open.

Sadly, for him, he is not in that sort of form now. Since reaching the second round of the French Open last October, he has contested five matches and lost them all.

Four in that sequence have been in 2021, and have included first round defeats at the Australian Open and on home soil in Cordoba and Buenos Aires.

Gombos v Londero Prediction and Tip

This is a  battle between two men who are desperately out of form. The good news for one of them is that the winner will make it through to the second round, and Londero may just have the edge as the clay court specialist.
