Kovinic Trying to Climb Rankings Again

Kovinic has been in two WTA finals, but lost them both – the Tianjin Open in 2015, and the Istanbul Cup  a year later. She did, though, win the doubles’ event at the Gastein Ladies Open in Austria, and has also won 12 competitions on the ITF circuit.

Ranked as high as 46 in the world three years ago, several years of indifferent form have seen her drift down the rankings.

2021 has not been her best year in tour so far. She was beaten in the first round in Abu Dhabi, and was thrashed at the same stage in the Australian Open, failing to win a  single game. In mitigation though, it should be note that her opponent was Ashleigh Barty.

In her last event, she got to the second round in Guadalajara, losing then to the American Lauren Davis.

Talaba, a Romanian Qualifier

Reaching the main draw in Charleston is something of a landmark achievement for the 25-year-old Romanian It  is the first time she has reached this stage of  a senior WTA event, having previously failed to qualify for the French Open last year.

And she has got there by beating two higher-ranked ;players, Fernanda Contreras  Gomez of Mexico, and Wang Xin of China, both in three sets.

Talaba spends the time primarily on the ITF tour where she has appeared in six finals, winning four of them, most recently in Redding, the USA in September 2019.  She has also enjoyed a fair degree of success at that level in doubles’ events.

Prior to Charleston, her most recent appearance was at an ITF tournament in Baton Rouge, where she reached the third round.

Kovinic v Talaba Prediction and Tip

This should be an easy win for Kovinic against a player making her senior WTA main draw debut.

Tip: Kovinic to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
