Astra Sharma v Giulia Gatto-Monticone Head to Head

While these two have never met in the main draw at the highest level, Sharma and Gatto-Monticone did play twice last year in the qualifiers of WTA competitions. Both matches came on hard courts, at Acapulco and Monterrey and Gatto-Monticone won both those matches.

Sharma Hoping to Mirror Guadalajara Form

Among the five tournaments that Sharma has played all season, it was only at Guadalajara she managed to carve out something for herself. As a qualifier with wins over Kurumi Nara and Harriet Dart, she won a couple more rounds in the main draw, defeating lucky loser Dart and then stunning Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

And those results will come as a huge relief for the Aussie, after she had earlier fallen in the openers at the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open, and then lost in the qualifiers at the Adelaide International.

While Sharma’s qualifying defeat in Miami after her run at Guadalajara wouldn’t have pleased her too much, she would come into the clay court swing with her confidence lot higher than it was after her Adelaide ouster.

Astra likes playing on hard court surfaces but her record on clay isn’t as underwhelming as some of the other lower-ranked players, having also won a couple of her ITF titles on it.

Gatto-Monticone Hoping to Overturn Poor Clay Run from 2020

A semifinal at the Buenos Aires ITF competition last week was followed by a couple of qualifying victories to give Gatto-Monticone a 5-1 win-loss record on clay this season, a far cry from her 4-6 last year on the same surface.

To be fair to Gatto-Monticone, most of those losses last season came as a result of attempting to make it to the main draws of the WTA events on clay while she did make it to the third round of the Prague Open in the process.

Overall though, the 33-year-old has never made it better than 148th in the world and that just shows how difficult it would be to get past the opening round of a WTA tournament. And while her opponent is herself not too highly-ranked, Gatto-Monticone will have to dig rather deep to notch up a victory here.

Sharma v Gatto-Monticone Prediction and Tip

Sharma’s solid performances in recent times make her a favourite as does her strong record on clay. Backing her to go through.

Tip: Sharma to win: 4/6 (bet365)
