Jaume Munar v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the Canberra Challenger in 2020 and Munar had won that encounter in straight sets.

Munar Coming off Some Excellent Clay Form

The 23-year-old’s love and preference for clay can be found in the fact that more than three months into the season and Munar is yet to play a match on any surface other than clay. That’s 23 matches on clay and none elsewhere.

And it’s not just matches for the sake of it, but he has also recorded 18 wins in those, including a Challenger title victory in Antalya and two other finals appearances. Munar was a finalist at the second Challenger tournament played in Antalya and then made it to the title-decider last week at this very venue which was the host to the Marbella Challenger.

And his strong showing hasn’t been restricted to the Challenger circuit alone with Munar making it through the qualifiers at Buenos Aires and defeating Frances Tiafoe en route his quarterfinal appearance there.

While Munar did go down in the openers in Cordoba and Santiago, his overall confidence would be touching the skies and he will start off here knowing he has a good chance to add some ranking points to his tally.

Qualifier Laaksonen Hoping for Rare Main Draw Win

It was in the middle of October last year that Laaksonen, a qualifier at the Cologne Open, won his opening round match to set up a meeting with Felix Auger-Aliassime. He lost that match to his Canadian opponent and since then has never won another main draw encounter again.

One of the main reasons for that is Laaksonen has opted to feature on the Challenger circuit instead, trying to garner as many ranking points as he can but those results haven’t been up to the scratch either.

In the eight tournaments Laaksonen has played in since that Cologne Open win, his best performance came in Nur-Sultan earlier this year where he reached the semifinal on those indoor hard court surfaces. There were a couple of quarterfinal appearances last season but at the others he has bowed out early.

And with first round losses at the Great Ocean Road Open, Australian Open, Acapulco Open and the Miami Masters to go with that as well, it does look like things could get very tough for the Swiss qualifier in this opener here.

Munar v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip

Munar is 1/3 to win this and we are backing the Spaniard to come through and to do that easily in this one. Expecting a straight-set win for Munar.

Tip: Munar to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
