Broady Inching up to His Career-Best
He is 27 years old but Broady is yet to break into the top 150 on the ATP charts. The other way, however, to look at this is his more recent performances which have been sparkling and could be a turning of the corner for the Brit.
Almost two years to the date, Broady was languishing at the 333rd rank on the ATP circuit, struggling to win matches even on the lower circuits on a consistent basis. He ended the season 240th, and then followed it up with a solid 2020 season where he made it to two Challenger finals and pushed his rank up to 188th by the time the year had ended.
And Broady has taken that form over to this new season. After a disappoint defeat in the Australian Open qualifiers, he has played in three Challenger tournaments and entered the final at two of them. At the third, he reached the semifinal.
Now by winning his qualifiers at this tournament, the Brit has made it to the main draw of back to back ATP competitions and as luck would have it, he has been drawn to play a fellow qualifier. Surely this is his chance for a rare main draw victory.

Huesler Loved His Time on Clay in 2020
The 24-year-old Huesler was ranked outside the top 300 when tennis resumed last season following its break for the pandemic. In less than three months he had broken into the top 150 and has now settled in at 151st in the world this season.
This came on the back of his performances on clay, which he later extended to indoor hard court as well.
Huesler made it to the main draw at the Kitzbuhel Open and with wins over Fabio Fognini and Feliciano Lopez, entered the semifinal of that tournament. Less than two weeks later he went on to clinch the Sibiu Challenger and doubled it with a title at the Ismaning Challenger the following month as well.
This year, Huesler hasn’t been as prolific though but by winning two qualifying rounds here in Cagliari, he has made it to the main draw of his first ATP tournament. With clay his favourite surface, he will start things off here with an edge.

There’s not much to choose between the two players based on their rankings and the odds also suggest something similar – Huesler is 4/5 to win this while Broady starts off at 1/1. We think Huesler’s superior clay court record make him a favourite for this.
