Yannick Hanfmann v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head
The pair have played once before in the quarter-final of a Challenger event in Todi, Italy, last year, Hanfmann winning in straight sets.
Hanfmann Upsets Number Six Seed
Hanfmann has been in two ATP finals, both on clay, losing at the final stage of the Swiss Open in 2017, and again in Kitzbuhel last year. Still there had been little sign of that form in 2021, although he did reach the second round in Miami, losing then to Karen Khachanov.
However, he defied the odds to beat the number six seed, Tommy Paul; of the USA in the first round, a man ranked 56 places above him in the world rankings.
It was a tough match with fluctuating fortunes.
The tone was set in the firsts et as Hanfmann led by two breaks only to be pegged back by the American. It went to a tie-break, where Paul had five set points and squandered them all. And, when a set point of his own came along, Hanfmann ruthlessly converted it.
The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but, this time, it was the German who faltered and the American was able to square the match.
Again, the pair swapped service breaks in the third, but then Hanfmann broke for what proved to be the final time, and served out for the match.
Cecchinato Wins All-Italian Battle
Cecchinato had won just one match in the whole of 2021 before his first-round encounter with compatriot Thomas Fabbiano, the world 175, on Tuesday. The first set which with serve, with very few break opportunities, until Fabbiano offered up a chance which Cecchinato was able to exploit and he went to claim the set.
Games and the points got longer in the second set, as both men found it harder to hold serve, and it was Fabbiano who was able to force the decisive advantage and level the match.
However, the third set reverted to the pattern of the first, and was dominated by serve. There was only one break point created, and that was by Cecchinato who duly converted it. He saw out the rest of the match comfortably from there.
Hanfmann v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip
Hanfmann will be buoyed by his victory over Paul, whilst Cecchinato struggled to beat his compatriot Fabbiano. The German won their previous encounter last year, and will start favourite to do so again.
Tip: Hanfmann to win: 10/11 (bet365)
