Ash Barty v Shelby Rogers Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between Australia’s Barty and Rogers of USA and the world number one has won every single time. While their first outing came in the second round of the 2017 Australian Open, their next two matches were held in Australia earlier this year.
Barty needed three sets at the Yarra Valley Classic and make it to the semifinal before she defeated Rogers 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Barty Wastes No Time on Doi
It was a victorious return to clay for the top seeded Barty as she made a mincemeat of Misaki Doi in her second round match following an opening bye. Needing just 62 minutes, Barty sealed her third round place with a 6-2, 6-1 win over her Japanese opponent.
The last time Barty had played on clay was way back in the final of the 2019 French Open. She had gone on to win that match to claim her first – and so far, only – Grand Slam title but since then, the pandemic-induced travel restrictions had meant she couldn’t play at all in the second half of the previous season.
Coming into this tournament with a win at the Miami Open, Barty broke Doi for the first time only in the sixth game but followed that up with four successive breaks of serve to win the encounter. In fact, from 2-2 in the first set, Doi did not win a single game on her own serve as Barty steamrolled into the round of 16.
She will now face a tougher test against a player who has been in-form all season but with a 2-0 record against her this season, Barty will be a heavy favourite.
Rogers Makes a Comeback Win
While Rogers was a slight favourite going into her second round match against fellow American Amanda Anisimova, it needed her to dig deep into her reserves to come through in three sets.
In fact it was a lower-body fitness issue for Anisimova that made it easier for Rogers, who looked to be heading out, down a set and 1-4 in the second.
Unfortunately for Anisimova she struggled with her play after returning from a medical time-out, and Rogers took full advantage, breaking back twice to level the proceedings and once again to claim the set.
The third set went the bizarre way. Neither player was able to hold her serve on either side of the seventh game – which was won by Rogers on her serve – and that proved to be the crucial hold that paved the match in favour of the world number 52.
Against Barty, however, Rogers will need to do a lot better on her serve if she needs to realistically find a way to get past the world number one.
Barty v Rogers Prediction and Tip
Barty should have no trouble getting past a familiar opponent whom she has faced twice already this season. Tipping a straight-set win for the Aussie.
Tip: Barty to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
