Ons Jabeur v Cori Gauff Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two and Gauff has won both times.

The first meeting came at the Lexington Open last year immediately after the pandemic break and Gauff needed three sets to get past Jabeur in that quarterfinal. This was followed by a first round encounter at the Italian Open on clay and resulted in a straight-set victory for Gauff.

Jabeur Overturns a Slow Start

Alize Cornet had already upset Elise Mertens in her previous match and when she took the first set off Jabeur in their third round encounter, it seemed like another upset was on the cards. Especially because Jabeur had three chances to win the set on her own serve and frittered them all away.

The second set began with the two players trading breaks before Jabeur broke Cornet two more times in the set. The set ended the same way it had begun, with the pair dropping their serves to allow Jabeur an equaliser.

In the decider, Jabeur led 2-0, only to lose her own serve twice and fall 3-2 behind. A break in the very next game made it 3-3 and the match looked to be headed for an exciting finish but the Tunisian world number 28 had other ideas, running through the next three games with ease and clinching the match.

This win followed a solid clay court start for Jabeur earlier when she defeated Martina Trevisan and Hailey Baptiste in straight sets in the first two rounds.

Gauff Too Strong for Davis

Having gotten the better of Sofia Kenin previously, Lauren Davis’ confidence would have been sky-high coming into her third round match against teenager Gauff, but it was the latter who got off to a flying start with a break to love in the very second game.

While Davis did break back in the fifth game to get the serves back on track, Gauff derailed her serve for the rest of the set with consecutive breaks that won her the set.

Neither player found it easy to hold their serves in the second set though. The first four games all went to breaks of serve, which were followed by two holds, and four more breaks. In fact from 5-5, the next eight points were all won by the receiving player!

Gauff finally completed the victory in the tie-breaker as she came back from 0-2 down to rattle off the next seven points in a row. This victory comes on the back of wins over Tsvetana Pironkova and Ludmilla Samonsova.

Jabeur v Gauff Prediction and Tip

Interesting to see that Gauff (4/7 with bet365) is a heavy favourite for this one but we think Jabeur’s shown good rhythm all competition and should be able to test her opponent out.

Tip: Jabeur to win a set: 4/7 (bet365)
