Shelby Rogers v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

It would be their second meeting on the WTA tour, with Kovinic winning their previous encounter at the Tianjin Open in 2016.

However, a lot has changed since then, particularly in 2021 as Kovinic has been on an impressive run of late, while Rogers, who was in strife before her arrival in Charleston, has finally found her touch during the course of the tournament.

In fact, Rogers could pose a serious threat to Kovinic’s bid to win the title at the MUSC Health Women’s Open.

Dominant Kovinic Teaches Tomova a Lesson

In the second round, Kovinic literally taught Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria a lesson in clay court tennis. The match lasted an hour and 20 minutes, but it was the Montenegrin, who dominated the proceedings from the outset.

While, both the players dropped their respective serves on a few occasions, Kovinic was always in control of the contest and that’s why, she was able to seal a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win over the Bulgarian on Tuesday.

Indeed, Kovinic is experiencing an extremely rich vein of form at the moment. Last week, she was the runner-up at the Charleston Open, where she was defeated by World No. 29 Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in straight sets.

Surely, Kovinic must have felt a little disappointed after losing the final to Kudermetova because she had done all the hard work needed to win the title. But, it looked like she ran out of gas in the final after coming through five tough matches during the course of the tournament.

It looks like Kovinic has put that disappointment behind her. She would be itching to go a step better in Charleston this week and considering her form, it won’t be a massive surprise.

Rogers on a Roll at the Moment

If there’s a player, who could possibly stop Kovinic from winning the title in Charleston, it is her quarterfinal opponent Shelby Rogers. Surprisingly, Rogers had hardly won enough matches to trouble anyone before her arrival at the Althea Gibson Club Court, but somehow she has managed to turn things around in the ongoing tournament.

Rogers began her campaign with one of the most lopsided wins of her career, absolutely destroying Caty McNally 6-0, 6-1 in a contest, which lasted just a shade over an hour. Undoubtedly, Rogers’ ploy of targeting the weak McNally serves did pay rich dividends as she broke her five times, leaving McNally shell-shocked at times.

In the second round, Rogers was up against compatriot Claire Liu and once again, she put up a dominant display of her trademark heavy ground-strokes. In fact, Rogers won 85% points behind her first serve and broke Liu on five occasions before winning the match 6-2, 6-2 without wasting too much energy on the court.

Her two impressive wins this week have come on the back of a fine run in Charleston last week, where Rogers had reached the third round before being beaten by World No. 1 Ash Barty.

Kovinic v Rogers Prediction and Tip

No surprises here as Rogers starts off as the overwhelming favourite at 1/3, but Kovinic could push her opponent a little here.

Tip: Rogers to win AND Over 19.5 games: 11/8 (bet365)
