Jordan Thompson v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the Hertogenbosch Open in 2019 on grass where Thompson won that semifinal in straight sets before losing the final.

Thompson Loses in Second Round at Monte-Carlo Masters

Not quite a fan of clay court surfaces, Thompson started off the clay swing with a win and defeat at the Monte-Carlo Masters last week. Even there the Aussie struggled to overcome the already-struggling Benoit Paire in the opening round before falling in straight sets to Fabio Fognini.

Before that, Thompson’s season on hard court has been slightly underwhelming too.

It had started on a bright note when the Aussie reached the quarterfinal of the Great Ocean Road Open but that was followed by three defeats from four matches. This included first round exits at the Australian Open and ATP Dubai and a second round loss at the Miami Masters.

What Thompson will hope for is for a better showing in the opener here, in what will be his first ever appearance in Barcelona.

Gasquet Begins Clay Swing

The 34-year-old Gasquet hasn’t had the best of seasons so far either but that’s also been down to the lack of the number of matches he has played so far. It started with just one appearance in Australia, at the Murray River Open where he lost to MacKenzie McDonald in his opener before he moved to Asia to participate in the tournaments in Doha and Dubai.

At the former, he won his opener but withdrew from the second round while at the second competition Gasquet lost to Hubert Hurkacz after having gotten past Marco Cecchinato in his opener.

Gasquet hasn’t played on clay this season and his only match on dirt last season came at the French Open where he fell to Roberto Bautista-Agut. In turn, he last won a match on this surface at the 2019 Hamburg Open, nearly two years ago.

Can he trump his Aussie opponent who hasn’t had the best of times on clay either?

Thompson v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

This could go down right to the wire. On the one side is a player who doesn’t enjoy clay and has generally struggled to get going this season while on the other is one who is rusty from lack of tennis and last won a match on clay in 2019. Tough to pick a winner here and we could see a three-setter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
