Cristian Garin v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

Garin and Nishikori have only met once in the past and it was the Chilean, who hammered Nishikori 6-0, 6-3 on the clay courts of Hamburg last year.

Indeed, the ever improving Garin has been a player, who loves to play on clay, while Nishikori’s game is best suited to the hard courts. But, it could very well turn out to be a fascinating contest, considering Nishikori’s experience and Garin’s expertise on the red dirt.

Nishikori Overcomes Pella in Round 1

Nishikori, who is known for his precision oriented groundstrokes and fighting spirit, once again showed that he is a great fighter on the court. In his opener in Barcelona, the former World No. 4 met Guio Pella of Argentina and looked completely down and out at one point of time in the contest as his opponent led by a set and a break.

However, Nishikori did what he is known, that is, he fought back and somehow managed to swing the tide in his favour. The three-time French Open quarterfinalist, first won the second set in an extremely tight tiebreaker before annihilating Pella in the third, which Nishikori won with a 6-2 scoreline.

Almost everyone in the tennis world knows this fact that when Nishikori is on song, he is almost impossible. Indeed, his multiple wins over ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal, 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic have provided enough proof of his talent and potential.

Once again, he will look to continue his campaign in Barcelona with another fine performance against Garin on Wednesday.

Garin Looks to Continue his Good Form on Clay

World number 22 Christian Garin is a recognized exponent of clay court tennis. The Chilean has several tricks in his bag, which help him in excelling on the red dirt.

Garin’s biggest asset on the surface, is his movement. Undoubtedly, he is an excellent mover on the dirt. While, he does not possess the power to overpower his rivals from the baseline, his ability to absorb pace and neutralize his rivals, keeps him in good stead in close matches.

What’s more, Garin is adept at placing his shots in difficult returning positions and he keeps changing the direction of the ball, to force his adversaries to move from one corner to other of the court.

All the aforementioned qualities helped Garin in winning the trophy in Santiago earlier this year. The Chilean, who thrives on clay, will be hoping for a similar result this week as well.

Garin v Nishikori and Tip

Garin will have a slight edge over Nishikori in this contest, considering the Chilean has won a title on clay in 2021. But, Nishikori could cause an upset, especially after his win over Pella, which would have given him some confidence to unleash his attacking game in this encounter.

Tip: Garin to win three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
