Spain’s Carreno Busta kick-starts the Barcelona Open with some brilliant form under his belt on clay. At the Marbella Open earlier this month, he came through to the final and then edged out Jaume Munar to lift the title.
And at the Monte-Carlo Masters, wins over Stefano Travaglia and Karen Khachanov took him to the third round where he then went down fighting in a gruelling three-setter against Casper Ruud.
This run continues his turnaround in clay court fortunes after he had reached the quarterfinal at the French Open last season, surprising Roberto Bautista-Agut on the way. In turn he had emulated his best-ever performance at Roland-Garros, having also made the last-eight in 2017.
Carreno Busta had earlier begun the season with two wins and a defeat at both, the ATP Cup and the Australian Open before crashing out of the ATP Dubai in the first round.

Thompson Edges Past Gasquet
While it was Richard Gasquet who had gone into his first round match here against Thompson as a favourite, there was a strong sense of a fighting opener and that’s what transpired. In a match lasting three sets and three hours and 20 minutes, Thompson came through by winning two tie-breakers and sealed his second round berth.
Thompson won 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (3) to clinch a rare clay court win.
Interestingly, Thompson was broken three times in the match and broke just twice in return but it was his ability to keep his calm in the two tie-breakers that saw him through to the win.
In the first, Thompson had three set-points, dropped the first two but then served it out to win it. And then in the third set, he saved two match-points on his serve at 4-5, missed out on a couple of break-points next game before winning the tie-breaker 7-3.
Things could get a lot tougher against Carreno Busta though.
Carreno Busta v Thompson Prediction and Tip
It turned out to be a solid three-setter for the Aussie in round two but given how long it went, he will have to regroup quickly and try and come out all guns blazing against his highly-pedigreed Spanish opponent. Looking at a straight-set win for Carreno Busta.
