Vondrousova Making Madrid Debut

A former French Open finalist, Vondrousova makes her debut at this year’s Madrid Open. And she enters this competition on the back of a solid set of results on hard court surfaces but with a 1-1 record on clay.

That came at the Stuttgart Open played last week where Vondrousova had no difficulties getting past Marie Bouzkova but then fell tamely to Simona Halep in second round.

Vondrousova, who was returning from her surgery last year, had featured in three clay court tournaments then and was sent packing from two of them in their openers. This included French Open where she had only in the previous season ran off to make the final.

In the third at Rome, Vondrousova showed she was capable of a lot more as she reached the semifinal there before going down to Karolina Pliskova. A tricky opener awaits her here.

Kerber’s Clay Court Struggles Well-Chronicled

A best showing of a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open isn’t something to be mocked about but for player who has won a title at each of the other three Grand Slams, Kerber would be a tad disappointed she hasn’t done better at Roland-Garros.

And on clay in general too.

Because over the last few seasons, Kerber’s struggles on dirt have amplified, with the German having won just three of her last eight encounters on this surface spread over three seasons.

In 2019, for instance, Kerber fell to a second round defeat at Stuttgart, and an opening loss at the French Open. Last year she played in Rome and Paris and lost her openers at both and this season has begun no differently.

Facing the 217th-ranked Ekaterine Gorgodze, Kerber won her opener at the Stuttgart Open but then fell in straight sets to Elina Svitolina. And now, facing Vondrousova, she will have a tough opener on hand in a tournament in which she has never gone beyond the quarterfinal.
