Aryna Sabalenka v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2018 US Open and Sabalenka had won that second round match in straight sets.

Sabalenka Coming off Stuttgart Final

Sabalenka made it to her second final of the season when she cruised through to the title-decider at the Stuttgart Open last week. With wins over Anett Kontaveit and – more importantly – Simona Halep to boot in that competition, it would have given Sabalenka oodles of confidence coming into this competition.

The Belarusian fell to Ash Barty in the final there but even that wasn’t without a fight as the seventh-ranked player grabbed the first set of the encounter.

Earlier this season, Sabalenka had won the title in Abu Dhabi and won three matches apiece at both, the Australian Open and Miami Open. Not known for her clay court prowess, Sabalenka looked to have put in enough work on it off season and the start to it has been excellent.

It now remains to be seen if Sabalenka can reciprocate something similar in this WTA 1000 competition.

Zvonareva Eases Through Qualifiers

Russian veteran Zvonareva made it through to the main draw of this competition with two easy wins over Arantxa Rus and Ana Karolina Schmiedlova, dropping just eight games over the four sets in those encounters.

Earlier in the season, Zvonareva has shown signs of improvement with a second round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open to kick-start the year and third round at the Yarra Valley Classic to go with it.

Her best performance of the season came at the St. Petersburg Open where the Russian propelled into the semifinals before turning her attention to clay. The 12-time WTA tournament winner and a former world number two, Zvonareva has won just two of her titles on clay while her best showing at Roland Garros is a quarterfinal appearance.

Unfortunately for the Russian, she hasn’t done too well in Madrid with just one third round showing and that too in 2011. Against Sabalenka, her woes are only going to become more difficult.

Sabalenka v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

An easy, straightforward win looks the most likely option for Sabalenka as she looks to go deeper into the competition.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
