Maria Sakkari v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

The only previous meeting between Sakkari and Anisimova before this came at the previous year’s US Open. Sakkari easily won that third round encounter in straight sets.

Sakkari Inching Up the Rankings Charts

She was outside the top 50 on the WTA rankings in 2019 and despite a season that was so curtailed by the pandemic and a ranking system that made it difficult for players to climb up the charts, Sakkari has managed to break into the top 20 this season.

The Greek is currently 19th in the world, as she looks to add on to her maiden WTA title she had won in 2019. That win had come on the clay courts of Rabat, and while she hasn’t gone the distance again, Sakkari’s performances have been ones to watch.

For instance, Sakkari began this season with a semifinal appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open before losing to Aryna Sabalenka, and then made it to her third WTA 1000 semifinal, by reaching that round in Miami. She had earlier done that in Rome and Wuhan in the previous years.

Sakkari comes into this competition having played in one clay court tournament which came at the Stuttgart Open where she lost in the second round to Petra Kvitova. She has a solid challenge first up but one who has lost a bit of steam in recent times.

Anisimova 3-3 This Season

Injuries have obviously played their part, and as have personal issues but Anisimova’s results in recent times have been a far cry from those which had seen her climb to 21st in the world. That includes a semifinal appearance at the 2019 French Open and a title win at the Bogota Open that very year.

Anisimova hasn’t had the best of starts this season either.

Joining the tour late, the American won her opener at an ITF event before opting out of the competition and has followed that up with three wins and three defeats spread across three WTA tournaments.

More recently, shifting to clay, Anismova featured on clays of Charleston. She overcame Magda Linette in the opener there and then fell to Shelby Rogers in a tough three-setter.

While she hasn’t looked her own self, there were signs against Rogers she could be turning a corner. Against Sakkari, however, things might not get any easier.

Sakkari v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari starts off a heavy favourite at 1/2 to win it while Anisimova is 13/8 to get past her Greek opponent. Can expect a fighting show from the American.

Tip: Sakkari to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
