Naomi Osaka v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Cincinnati Open of 2020 which was played in New York where Osaka needed to come back from a set down to complete a second round victory.

Osaka Sees off Fellow Japanese

Osaka has never won a tournament on clay despite having won four Grand Slam titles and she had admitted going into this tournament she was both, excited and stressed coming into this competition because of that.

And starting out against the fellow Japanese player Misaki Doi, Osaka got off to a slow start. She lost her serve in the very second game of the match, and while she broke back twice to go 5-3 up, Osaka was unable to serve out the set the first time.

It took another break of serve in the 11th game for Osaka to then serve for the set and win it.

The second set was bit of a roll for Osaka, who broke Doi twice to clinch a 7-5, 6-2 win in nearly an hour and a half.

Osaka will now take on a stronger opponent but having shrugged off the rust in her first round match, she would be slightly more confident coming into this one.

In-Form Muchova Lives up to Favourites Tag

While Muchova has had a brilliant start to the season, her 8-1 win-loss record came on hard court surfaces. Which is why after she lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round of Stuttgart Open, the onus was on her to get back to some form on clay, a surface she hasn’t done too well on.

Which is also why she would be rather pleased with her 6-1, 6-3 victory in the opening round of this Madrid competition, defeating China’s Wang Qiang in her opener.

A semifinalist at the Australian Open with a win over Ash Barty, Muchova took an hour and 11 minutes to get past Qiang, breaking her opponent five times in the encounter. In fact it wasn’t until she had got herself those five breaks of serves that her Chinese had retaliated back with one of her own but it was a case of too little, too late.

Muchova wrapped it up soon after to set up this second round meeting with a player she would like to add to her ever-growing list of scalps. She might even have a chance on clay.

Osaka v Muchova Prediction and Tip

While Osaka starts a favourite with an offer of 4/7 for this, we are backing Muchova to win at least a set here at the same odds.
