Matteo Berrettini v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Italian Masters of 2017 where Fognini won the first round match in straight sets.

Berrettini Wins on Belgrade Clay

Playing in his second tournament on clay earlier in April in Serbia, Berrettini added a fourth ATP title to his kitty as he defeated Aslan Karatsev in the title-decider. It was also his third title on clay.

Berrettini, who had earlier lost his opener at the Monte-Carlo Masters, has a career win-loss record of 32-15 on clay. As opposed to that, he is 38-34 on hard court surfaces, which makes it a distant second as far as favourite surfaces for the Italian is concerned.

What’s interesting to note, however, is Berrettini’s best performance in a Masters competition came at the Shanghai Masters in 2019 where he reached the semifinal.

In Madrid, this will be the first time ever he plays a main draw match, having featured in only one previous round earlier and having gotten knocked out in the qualifiers there.

He faces a fellow Italian player whose record in Madrid isn’t the best either but one who did exhibit a career-best in this tournament in 2019.

Fognini Staves off Taberner Challenge

It hasn’t been the best of recent times for Fognini and that is exactly what ensured a player ranked 141st in the world, was given the kind of billing in this encounter against the Italian.

Fognini was 8/13 to win this, which typically shouldn’t have been that long given it’s the Italian’s favourite surface and the disparity in the rankings with Carlos Taberner. However, the manner in which Fognini had imploded in his most recent outing coming into this competition meant there still were doubts about his temperament.

And surely enough, Fognini needed to put up a big fight, needing three sets and two hours and 15 minutes to get past Taberner in his opening round match.

With Fognini having reached the third round at the Madrid Masters only once before, he sure will need to do a lot better than his last three matches – a loss to Casper Ruud, a default in Barcelona and this opener here in Madrid – to get past Berrettini.

Berrettini v Fognini Prediction and Tip

While one can never discount Fognini in a match on clay, Berrettini’s recent form gives him a very good chance of winning this. The only question is whether he can do that in a jiffy and we believe Fognini could test his fellow countryman.
