John Isner v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

The pair have met five times before, all on hard courts, with Isner leading their head-to-head series by three matches to two. The American won their first two matches in Beijing in 2013, and Auckland a year later, but the Spaniard claimed victory in Auckland again in 2016.

Isner won their match at the Miami Masters in 2019, but Bautista-Agut claimed his revenge in the same tournament in March.

Isner Wins Service Battle Against Kecmanovic

Isner is making his season debut in Europe and on clay, and began his campaign with a win, slightly against the odds, beating Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in straight sets.

Playing to his strengths, Isner made it a service battle from the start. The games were short, and there were few points scored against serve on either side of the net, until, serving to stay in the set, Kecmanovic offered up two break opportunities, the second of which Isner converted.

The pattern continued in the second set until the ninth game, when Kecmanovic forced four break points. He could not convert any of them though, and it ultimately meant a second set tie-break.

Kecmanovic had a set point, but squandered it, and, when Isner got a match point soon afterwards, the American was not so generous to his opponent and he sealed the win.

Bautista-Agut Battles Past Italian Qualifier

A semi-finalist in Madrid seven years ago, Bautista-Agut had to dig deep to reach the second round this time, pushed all the way by the Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato.

The Spaniard began well enough, breaking the Italian in the fifth game of the match, saving two breaks on his own serve next game, and then breaking once more to take the first set.

However, errors began to creep into his own, and, with both men struggling to hold serve towards the end of the set, it went to a tie-break.

This time it was the Italian who exerted pressure at the right moments and the match was levelled.

At the start of the third set the Spaniard had to save two break points against his own serve , and that appeared to be decisive as he broke the Italian seven games later. Cecchinato though was not done yet, and he fought back to square the scores once again.

However, serving to stay in the match, the pressure got top Cecchinato, and he was broken to love, a disappointing end for him after putting up such a fight..

Isner v Bautista-Agut Prediction and Tip

Although Isner has the better head to head record, all their previous matches have been on hard courts, which suit is style. Clay is more the natural domain of the Spaniard, and he will start the clear favourite, despite is first-round travails.
