Belgrade Winner Berrettini Maintains Form in Madrid

Berrettini won his fourth ATP career title in Belgrade ten days ago, beating the Russian Aslan Karatsev in the final in three sets.

And, having been given a first round bye, he demonstrated that he had carried that good form with him to Madrid, with an ultimately comfortable second round win over compatriot Fabio Fognini, the world 28.

Berrettini was on top from the start, breaking Fognini in his opening service game. Fognini saved another break point against his serve, but could make little impression on Berrettini in return, and the number eight seed was able to close out the set.

The trend continued in the second set, with the Fognini serve under almost constant pressure. There was only one more break of serve, in the third game, but Berrettini was always in control of the match, and served out to love.

Argentine Delbonis Beating Spaniards in their Own Backyard

Delbonis has shown a liking so far in Madrid this week for beating Spanish players in their own backyard, beginning on Tuesday with the world number 12 and number ten seed, Pablo Carreno-Busta.

It was the local man who took the first set, but Delbonis rallied in fine style, winning the next two to set up a meeting with the winner of the Estoril Open last week, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, ranked 37 in the world.

Again, the Argentine began as the underdog, but, in a tightly contested first set, he gave as good as he got, twice fighting back from a service break down to level the match.

And, when it went to a tie-break to settle things, it was he who proved to be the stronger, converting his third set point.

He consolidated his advantage by breaking the Spaniard in the first game of the second set, and never looked back from there. He was rock solid on his own serve and then, with Ramos-Vinolas serving to stay in the match, made absolutely sure of things by breaking him again.

Berrettini v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

Berrettini will start the favourite for this match, having gained a lot of confidence from his victory in Belgrade. And he has enjoyed more rest than Delbonis, who has had two tough matches in Madrid so far.
