Iga Swiatek v Alison Riske Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came as recently as at the Madrid Open earlier this week and Swiatek ripped past Riske dropping just two games in the process. A week later they will be facing off at the same stage of another WTA 1000 clay court competition.

Swiatek Makes Modest Start on Clay

French Open winner Swiatek began her clay swing in Madrid and looked to have started off well. She first defeated Alison Riske for the loss of just two games in round one before registering a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Laura Siegemund in the second round before taking on Ash Barty in the third.

Given Barty’s form, she was an obvious favourite going into the match but Swiatek’s nine-match winning streak on clay meant there wasn’t much to choose between the two. At least on paper.

Barty came through in straight sets against Swiatek, giving her the first taste of a bitter defeat on this surface in a long time. Swiatek, however, will look to take positives from that loss in the lead-up to both, this competition in Rome and the French Open where she starts off as a defending champion.

The good news for Swiatek starting out here is she faces an opponent she had defeated just one tournament ago and at the same stage of the competition.

Riske Has Won Five Games This Year

That’s right, games. Not matches. Riske has been out of action almost the entirety of the season, and played just two matches including one against Swiatek last week.

And all she has won is three games in her first match at the Australian Open against Anastasia Potapova and two against Swiatek in Madrid.

Her form had shown a dip last season too, with Riske having won just one match after tennis resumed following the pandemic break. Riske had fallen in the first round at the Cincinnati Open and then in both the matches she played on clay – in Rome and Paris – while her only win came at the US Open opener against Tatjana Maria.

As luck would have it, Riske has been drawn against Swiatek again and it looks like highly unlikely things would go any better for her. Question is, can she get herself into some kind of rhythm for the rest of the clay swing?

Swiatek v Riske Prediction and Tip

This is a straightforward call for a straight-set win for Swiatek who starts off as 1/17 to win this. We would avoid putting anything on this match unless you think Riske could win more than six games this match – another highly improbable event.
