Pablo Carreno-Busta v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players and the head to head is tied at 1-1. Both those matches came at Australian Open with Nishikori winning the 2019 edition fourth round match while Carreno-Busta clinching a straight-set win in 2021.

Carreno-Busta Juggernaut Continues

Despite a first round loss at the Madrid Masters, Carreno-Busta’s form on clay cannot be ignored and he followed up that defeat with a three-set win over Laslo Djere in his opener here in Rome.

It wasn’t the most scratchy performance from the Spaniard’s racquet but the sole break of serve that came about in the first game of the opening set saw his undoing. What might have been bit of a bother for the Marbella Open winner is he didn’t earn a single break-point in the entire set.

Carreno-Busta then saved two more break-points in the opening game of the second set and needed five of his own to finally break his opponent in the sixth game. He completed the equaliser by serving it out in the ninth game.

And with the hold over Djere tightening with every passing moment, Carreno-Busta then broke him three more times in the final set to end his opponent’s agony.

The world number 12 will now face an opponent who is a former semifinalist here.

Nishikori, a Four-Time Quarterfinalist

While his recent results don’t point to Nishikori been a success story on clay, he did show signs of his original spark at the Barcelona Open where he reached the third round with fighting wins over Guido Pella and Cristian Garin.

Even at the Madrid Masters last week, Nishikori sent Karen Khachanov packing in what was his seventh successive three-setter of the season before Nishikori was left with no answers against the eventual winner Alexander Zverev.

And he has now gotten past Fabio Fognini in another potentially tricky first round encounter.

Nishikori faced just one break-point in his 6-3, 6-4 win that took him an hour and 21 minutes and saw him break the Italian three times in the entire match. Can Nishikori now test an opponent who has done well in recent times on this surface?

Carreno-Busta v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

A Carreno-Busta win is more likely of the two results but not by much. And this is reflected in the offered odds with Carreno-Busta starting out 4/6 to win this. Backing the Spaniard for this one.
