Aryna Sabalenka v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

There has only been one previous meeting between these two players and Sabalenka has won that at the Ostrava Open. It came at the quarterfinal stage there and was an interesting one in that both players bagelled the other once in that encounter.

Sabalenka “Not Scared Anymore”

Sabalenka added a second title to her season after she shocked the world number one Ash Barty in the final of the Madrid Open last week. For a player who has done exceedingly well on hard court surfaces, Sabalenka’s transformation as a clay-courter has been a stunning one.

And speaking to reporters, Sabalenka put that down to her loss of fear of playing on clay, of losing to big-ticket players on this surface.

Having never reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal, Sabalenka had earlier reached the final of the Stuttgart Open earlier this year where she lost to Barty. A revenge extracted from the world number as she registered a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win over Bart in the Madrid Open final meant she had carved out her best ever result.

Three days on, she will have to quickly adjust to Italian Open where again, Sabalenka hasn’t gone past the first round. That should happen soon enough.

Sorribes Tormo Finally Wins on Clay

She has had a solid season on hard court surfaces this year but Sorribes Tormo hadn’t quite been able to transform that into anything worthwhile on clay so far.

The Spaniard lost her opener at the Bogota Open to Sara Errani and then fell in straight sets in the first round of the Madrid Open last week, going down to Simona Halep.

Coming into her first round match here against Camila Giorgi, Sorribes Tormo was a heavy favourite given her opponent’s form but it turned out to be gruelling contest and one that went into a third set.

More vitally, it was a match that lasted nearly four hours and saw two tie-breakers in it before Sorribes Tormo edged her opponent out 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 7-5. It was match that saw 19 breaks of serves, with the Spaniard getting one more than Giorgi to help her come through.

Won’t get any easier in round two.

Sabalenka v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

On the basis of what we have seen of Sorribes Tormo, it looks highly unlikely she will be able to test the world number four. Under 18.5 games sounds like a decent option.
