Matteo Berrettini v John Millman Head to Head

This will be the first meeting of any kind between World No. 9 Matteo Berrettini and his 42nd ranked opponent John Millman.

Berrettini Tames Basilashvili

Less than 48 hours after playing the Madrid Open final, Matteo Berrettini did not rest on his laurels and needed to summon a shrewd tactical plan to overcome the dangerous Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets.

Berrettini’s 4-6 6-2 6-4 win was built on patience and perseverance. He made a nervous start early on, dropping serve twice in the opening set. It was all Basilashvili needed to steal the first set in front of Berrettini’s home crowd.

The Italian restored order quickly thereafter, pressuring the Georgian into dropping short balls that landed right into his strike zone. Berrettini fired 12 aces in total as he mounted a fightback which keeps him interested for another deep run on clay.

Berrettini’s form on the dirt this year has shades of that 2019 season where he won the second career ATP title of his career in Budapest and without dropping a service game. Given his power-hitting style that is centred on first-strike tennis, it is a major surprise that two of his titles have on clay.

Millman Shocks Lajovic in Straight Sets

There were some eyebrow-raising results on the second day of the Italian Open, and one of those was recorded on Court 4 where John Millman secured one of his best wins on a claycourt against former Monte Carlo finalist Dusan Lajovic.

Millman won 6-3 6-4, securing two key breaks in the match and bullying the Serbian in lengthy exchanges with his durable athleticism. Lajovic’s rot continues as he suffered his sixth straight defeat.

The Australian World No. 42 won 74% of first-serve points, and faced only two break points behind serve, snuffing them out in the process. Millman’s reward is a place in the second round of the Italian Open for the second successive year, but he has never advanced past this stage.

Will the Aussie conjure up another massive upset on Wednesday against an in-form local favourite?

Berrettini v Millman Prediction and Tip

Berrettini navigated his way past a very dangerous opponent with very little time preparation. Rome seems to bring the best out of the Italian, and we are backing him to see off the Australian in emphatic fashion.
