Alexandrova Gets Brady Walkover

Alexandrova is into the third round of a tournament for the first time since the Australian Open back in February, when she lost to Ashleigh Barty.

And she managed it without having to lift a racket as her proposed second  round opponent, Jennifer Brady, the world number 13, withdrew I advance of their second round match with injury.

Earlier, she had enjoyed a comfortable first round victory over the Ukrainian qualifier, Marta Kostyuk, beating the teenage world number 79 in straight sets for the loss of just four days.

Her progress this week means that she has now emulated her previous best in a major WTA 1000 event, but this is the first time she has managed it on clay.

All her previous third round appearances – at Indian Wells, Miami and at the China Open – were on hard courts.

Pegula Stuns Osaka in Rome

Pegula scored arguably the biggest win of her career on Tuesday, defeating the world number two Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

It was the Japanese player who struck first, breaking Pegula early. But the American was soon level in what proved to be a tight first set.

Osaka had a set point, but Pegula saved it and, two games later, managed to save two more. And then in the tie-break, it was the Japanese player who proved the more fallible on serve and Pegula was able to take the first set.

The world number two is never at her best on clay, and her head began to drop, enabling Pegula to take control. With Osaka increasingly wayward from the back of the court, the American took advantage to break when Osaka’s volley skewed wide.

Osaka served to stay in the match but by that time, the game  up for her, and she dropped her serve one more time.

The American is in the third round for the second successive event, having also reached that stage in Madrid last week.

Alexandrova v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Pegula is tipped to win this match because she will be brim-full of confidence after her win against Osaka, having enjoyed a good run in Madrid as well last week.
